I'm currently doing all my research via the Maths department website. They have some excellent information on modules, lecturers and recommended books. Can't speak for any other departments, though.

That's department independant, so could be any time really. What course are you doing?
I don't know of any courses that require prior reading/work, so don't worry too much if you don't hear until later - I didn't find out any books I needed until the first lecture in each of my modules, two weeks into term. They are all readily available in the book shops and things.
