Re: AthleticsDitto.(Original post by Klinsmannic)
He's served his time if you ask me. UK Athletics can't have their cake and eat it- he completed his mandatory 2 year ban so let him compete again, they can't punish him for life if his sentence was only 2 years. Get him back in the system, do the tests, if he fails again then kick him out for life. But at the moment he's the best man for the job. Sure he acted like dick, and will be remembered for it, but he has to earn a living, and if he's clean and has done his time then give him that right. He'll get tested soon enough anyway, so I don't know what the big deal is. -
Re: AthleticsIf i'm not mistaken, Syed is an Oxbridge grad.(Original post by Klinsmannic)
He seems like an intelligent guy...journalism is probably the ideal career for someone like him. He's also involved in this charity table tennis event which includes Rio Ferdinand, some of the Reading footy team, Flintoff and a few other famous faces. It's gonna be on sky apparently. Exhibition tt is pretty cool to watch. -
Re: Athletics
yeah, go kelly! she'll have to pull out something special to beat hellebaut though...dont think shes got it in her. and theres a lot close behind going into the 800m, but in her current form hopefully she'll be able to hang on to 2nd...
so you an athlete then or just a follower? i'm a heptathlete myself so tend to keep a close eye!Last edited by velocity-girl; 07-03-2008 at 19:00. -
Re: Athletics
Tia Hellebaut literally fell over the line... gutted for Kelly but Hellebaut was always gonna be difficult to beat, with her high jump of 1.99...
Think it was Kelly's high jump that let her down today, but additional pressure from 2 no jumps in the long jump won't have helped that performance either, 6.45 is fantastic, especially under those circumstances! -
Re: AthleticsYes. If she'd got 1.84 the title would be hers - and 1.84 is easily within her.(Original post by RK)
Yep
If she'd cleared 1.84 in the high jump, would that have been enough to win?
Mens 60m final now...going to be interesting...
Glad Dwain didn't win gold to be honest - although I like to think he's clean now, is it possible he could still be benefitting from drugs he's taken in the past - how recently he last took them we don't know...
I just don't think it would help the sport's image in the UK if he had won. -
Re: Athletics
That's so sad for Kelly

But you need to have pretty much every event going well to really be champion and quite often she has one bad one, be it the high jump today, or the javelin as it usually is outdoors.
But she looks in great shapeand very strong already, so as she says she needs to work on technique etc now and so she should be doing even better by the summer.
Yep, please Dwaine didn't if I'm honest. It does seem a tainted medal, even though he is almost certainly clean now. Glad he got a medal for the team, but think gold would have been far too much and brought far too much attention to him and the bad side of the sport again. At least with silver the media coverage might be a little less and hence less damaging for the sport. -
Re: AthleticsI'm just a follower, always wanted to be a heptathlete but i figured i should have started athletics when i was younger, im 19 now, so thought it's a bit late.(Original post by velocity-girl)

Re: Athletics
DC is now considering his future in Athletics again

He should either commit to the sport or get out, all these comebacks and mixed signals are really damaging the sport, especially when he has a top lawyer behind him to get his own way!
Not really been watching the indoors tbh but absolutely superb by Kwakye to get silver. Hmmm, whats happened to Abi Oyepitan anyway? -
Re: AthleticsI think was injured/out for most of the year after the Olympics (2005) and if I'm honest I haven't heard anything at all about her since then.(Original post by SuperDaz)

It's really disappointing really as she did so well back in 2004 to reach the final (the first British woman I ever remember reaching a World or Olympic sprint final).
I do think I saw her name on a list of top athletes who still get funding etc for their potential, so maybe she is still out through injury? But to be honest, I've no idea. -
Re: Athletics
You have to say it's been a pretty successful championships for GB this time around.
Yest, if I'm honest, I've been disappointed with one or two performances, so should really have been better, both performance wise and medal wise - which hopefully bodes well for the summer.
Can you say GB are starting to develop again in athletics? Since the early 2000s it seems to have been the discussion following most championships and only in 2006 the team left the world indoors with no medals at all.
Perhaps it's to early to say, but hopefully we'll see if this is right come the summer and beyond

Re: Athletics
First of all - respect to Philips Idowu. That was a fantastic performance this afternoon.
I'd agree with what you say though, I have been a bit disappointed with some results, but I know that as an athlete you can't always pull out a great performance all the time. But this really was the time to do it...
I think GB are on the up. We're not back to the golden age of the 90s (Edwards, Jackson, Gunnell, Christie, Backley...) but I think we're definitely seeing an improvement. Especially if you look at the current crop of youngsters - there seem to be a lot of very talented U15/17s at the moment, although the current 20s age group is a bit thin on the ground.
