Re: Athletics
Bolt was amaaaaazing. The scary thing is that this isnt his favourite event, he eased up with 10m to go and that he can get better! I think MJ's 200m record is under real threat. Bolt is also quite an awesome 400m runner too but does that quite rarely.
Powell chokes, what a surprise
I'm glad Dix got the bronze, I thought we might have seen all 8 men under 10s but Patton and Burns just missed out.
Shame to see Gay miss the final too, he just wasnt 100%
Heptathalon - Sotherton was good on the track, had a decent javelin by her standards but didnt really perform in the field events that shes good at which is a shame. If she had performed her PBs in the long jump and shot then she would have won gold
800m W - I thought one brit would reach the final
400m W - All three brit girls reach the semi finals. It will be tough to reach the final but you'd hope Ohuruogo and Sanders both can
Long Jump M - First time qualifciation for Rutherford. Could be an outside bet for a medal because noone else really stood out.
I'm in athletics fever. I think I'll stay up and watch the marathon with Paula (well I'll watch the start, put on a film, then catch the end
)

Re: AthleticsBolt was an MJ style runner when he was younger, he ran sub 45 secs aged like 15/16, when i heard he was moving down to the 100 i was shcoked as id always heard of/seen him as a 200/400 runner as he was brilliant at both of them, now i know why he steped down a distance!!! he was BRILLIANT today!!!! could have easily gone sub 9.6 had he not done a BIG BIG showboat!!!(Original post by SuperDaz)

Re: Athletics
Saw the highlights on Setanta, Bolt again wasnt really trying that hard. Poor start but ended up jogging 9.83
Wariner decides to run a SB a week after the Olympic final and proclaim himself number 1, good work Jez
Sprint hurdles were good as was the Javelin
Jelimo is awesome and will undoubtedly win the golden league, and hopefully Vlasic will join her too. -
Re: Athletics
A very impressive 9.87 by Powell at Gateshead (second video). A totally wet track with puddles on it. How did he do that?! I'm pleased for him.

Re: Athletics
It was quite a poor meet, not helped by the weather, Powell was the only real highlight. How on earth does he run 9.87 in conditions like that but runs slower in perfect conditions in Beijing!
Dave Collins leaves his post too. Not a surprise at all but with only four years to go, it will take some effort to get the reputed 10 medal target we're after! -
Re: AthleticsI wondered the same too.(Original post by SuperDaz)

Hope he can conquer what ever issue it was that bothered him a few weeks ago in Beijing to grab a Gold in 2012. -
Re: AthleticsYes I know what its called(Original post by PE Crazy)
its called bottling it, he's done it at all the major championships since he hit the big time.
lol - i just want him to get at least a gold in the 100m in London 2012, but we shall see.
Maybe he should invest in some sort of therapy or something to help him focus and not bottle it at the bigger events? . . . hmmm! -
Re: AthleticsIf he can relax, most definitely. The dude has got power and explosiveness (in his start). I'm no sprint expert, I only watch it now and then seasonally, but he appears to have a much stronger start than Bolt (due to his height probably).(Original post by TheStig1989)
Powells just run 9.72,
any chance of him being a threat to bolts world domination in the near future?
These Jamaican dudes are likeable guys. I find it hard to root for one of them in particular. -
Re: Athletics
I cant help but feel shortchanged by the Olympic 100m final now, although it was great to see Bolt smash the WR, it would have been great if Asafa brought his 'A' game too. Hopefully in 2012 Bolt, Powell, Gay, Dix and whoever will all be at their peak in the final.
Powell also ran 8.9seconds in his split for the 4x100m! He makes speedy gonzales look like regular gonzales
In other news, I read an interesting article in the Telegraph today with some ideas on how athletics can improve in the next few years. They were
1 Establish value for money: The number of athletes receiving Lottery support has been cut drastically but there are still more than 100. This is the time to focus on the serious contenders for London 2012.
2 Let go: Many older athletes and famous names have talked of being at London 2012, but the reality is that few will be genuine contenders. Now is the time to let them go.
3 Centralisation: The move to bring athletes and coaches to Britain’s under-used high-performance centres needs to be intensified. There is expertise here and it must be shared.
4 Middle and long distance: Brendan Foster’s on-air rant about British performances in Beijing reflected a national frustration. If their race tactics were improved, it would be a start.
5 Competition: British athletes do not compete enough. So when they get to major championships, they are often found wanting. -
Re: Athletics
Agree with 3, uka should look at the GB cycling team which has improved dramtically since moving them all to manchester. Jamaican have done it too and look at their olympics! (In case you didnt know Germaine Mason also trains with asafa and co)
I think if athletes were "let go" if there getting a bit old then Danvers probably wouldnt have medaled in beijing. Interesting that mason also wasnt getting much funding or jade johnson.
