Athletics

Hello!

The World Athletics Champions ships started last night.

Anyone seen anything yet? I was unable to watch any last night, but there is some more on this morning, starting at just after 11am.

Seems like a good morning over there for the British heptathlon girls - after 2 events Jessica Ennis is second around 50 point sbehind Karolina Kluft while Kelly Sotherton is 4th, around 70 points away from thrid place!

Watched a bit this morning (flicking in and out with the footie on). Ennis bounced back really well in the 200m and both she and Sotherton could be looking to sneak into the medals with solid performances tomorrow, so that's something to look forward to.

Pavey just missed out on bronze I hear which is a shame, but we still had the 3 girls looking impressive in the 800m today. Although there won't be much going for us Brits in the men's 100m, I'm really looking forward to Tyson Gay v Asafa Powell! Oh, and Obikwelu got a D/Q in the first round heats! :s-smilie: Damn that's gotta take the piss after all the build up and training.

Solid performance from Kelly Sotherton on day too? Hard to come by for the last couple of years du to her javelin....but thankfully she seems happier with at the moment..hopefully we could see 2 very good events in the ong jump and 800m form both girls tomorrow and OK performances in the javelin (judging by Jessica Ennis shot put, I gussing her weakness is in the throws).

Big shame over Pavey...was watching the race and then missed a bit and came bck to find her, an American and the NZ girl fighting it out for third place. Though she was going to do it too. Yet another near miss for her :frown: Brings back the memories for hen the same was happening for Paula Radcliffe all the time in the late 90s.
I wouldn't rule Marlon Devonish out of the 100m yet. Looking very solid and good so far. Big outsde chance for him for a minor medal. But if he gets to the final (which is a very big possibility) then who knows what could happen in those 10 short seconds (and through disqualifications for various reasons....)

I couldnt sleep last night so I watched a bit of it. Kluft is as amazing as ever I see, a shame that shes considering giving up the Heptathalon after the Olympics :frown:

Er, apart from relays then its hard to see too many medal hopes. Heptathalon, Idowu in the triple jump possibly, Goldie Sayers possibly in the Javelin.
can't watch much at all due to the time difference.

Kluft, giving up the hep after the olympics...

what motivations still exist to keep her going?? She's the world no.1 at what she does, she has been for quite some time, and will be for the foreseeable future. She's conquered all before her, achieved everything she could have done, etc....

only bits i watched today, were the Pickering, Devonish and Lewis-Francis heats. Pickering and LF pretty impressive in overcoming v.poor starts....
Yah, I was suprised to hear she might give up the heptathlon. But it did say she would continue in individual events...I guess there lies a challenge for her - to be good enough in a couple of events to always challenge for world class medals in them...probably the long jump and maybe high jump she could do well in...

I've watched all of it so far including the 11pm til 5am coverage last night, the only bit i missed was the end of the 10,000m but i can catch that on the highlights tonight.

I'm really hoping that Kelly Sotherton manages to get a medal, she sounded alot more confident over the javelin so fingers crossed she can. At least she's got a few pbs today so she is still improving
not the greatest attendances IMO, stadium is half empty

But to be fair, it is a VERY BIG stadium, so i may need to put that into conext

Looking forward to 100m final. Seems quite daft that we are all getting excited about a 10s race, i mean blink and you miss it. Hoping Gay crosses the line first.

I was going to start a thread on this, but I thought no-one watches athletics! :p: Yeah, I'm glad this is in Osaka because I've been nocturnal for a few months now, so I get to watch nearly everything live.

My thoughts so far: I'm happy with Ennis and Sotherton, although Jessica will be unhappy with her shot put. I'm hoping at least one of them can get a medal. And I'm hoping a couple of British 100m finalists, Devonish is looking in form. But I really want Asafa Powell to win... I hope his injuries are fully recovered. Unlucky about Obikwelu, but he didn't need to get off so early and get himself DQed. I think Idowu can get a medal definitely, especially considering he doesn't have to worry about Olsson (but I'm still massively gutted he's injured, again! :frown:). Shame for Pavey finishing fourth again, although Tirunesh Dibaba proved her doubters wrong.

I'm really looking forward to the 100m final tomorrow! It's always been my favourite event for some reason.
Regardless of position, Pavey ran like a titan. She did so, so well. :frown:

Same here... but I know it won't happen. :frown: Definitely by 12:10 though. ;yes;
Beat it by moving the television into your room. :p:

The steeplechase has seen some rather fascinating incidents these past couple of hours.

I don't usually care for the steeplechase, but it has indeed been interesting.

I have a TV in my room but just not a remote... hmmm, I could always try moving the TV within poking distance of my bed

These 400m should be good. Come on Nicola :hubba:
Good idea. :p:

It was quite worrying though seeing the people fall over...and it was interesting the see Brendan Foster appear worried over it for once and liken it to the Grand National and wathing to see who might fall at eat hurdle....that is whaat I have always ben like when watching steeplechase races...hehe

Hope that Austrian guy who was carried of in a neck brace is OK...

 The Grand National comment did make me laugh.

But, yeah, the latest update on that dude is that he quickly recovered full consciousness and, although he was kept in hospital overnight for observation, tests revealed no damage to his skull or neck... so good news.

Brillint stuff about him then

Good start to the day for the British girls in the heptathlon too. Good, solid scores in the long jump to strengthen thrid and fourth place.

Just need ahlf decent javelins from them and hopefully they will be OK to keep those positions after the 800m
