would it look better on under 16's if they do some work experience/voluntary work BEFORE going forward to being paid for work?
a) it looks good on your CV
b) shows your dedication
c) gives you an advantage unlike people who have no experience whatsoever.

a question of my own: does work experience have to be done through the school? or can you do it independantly?

In my school they recommend us to find work experience independently as this shows "self-determination" and looks better our CV. This is an optional choice though. My School also organises two other work experience placements for us: a son and daughter work day, where we go to work with our parents or family relatives and shadow them for 1day and the other is where you find a work oganisation which relates to the career you want to persue in the future and work there for a week.

But i have heard that we are the only school that does the son and daughter work day work experience. So i can't really speak for other schools. Sorry :frown:
Hope i helped though

i am 16 in less than two weeks and i have been struggling to find a part time job anywhere till recently. i have sent in a few applications to local retail shops and still waiting to hear back from them.
work experiance is now done in year 10. however students do not have to participate( this may just be my school)
im still struggling to find a job even with my birthday just around the corner.
im not sure how much longer i can wait to get some money as i have rent to pay.
i would ask friends and family about jobs but they are all jobs where you have to have specialist qualifications and training which at this age is not appropriate as i am not old enough to go university.
any one got any suggestions ??. much apreciated

bex  x

the other thing is you should get your NI number 2/3/4/5 months before you turn 16 however that doesnt help you get a job untill your 16 which is what ive found out.

Only places that really hire under 16's are takeaways, small shops, newsagents (paper rounds), markets and some party places (theres one that's a soft play area party place for kids near me that only seems to hire under 16s).
Unfortunately most of these will probably only pay £2.50 - £4 an hour which is quite shocking really.

I work at swimming school, just as an assistant really. To be fair though, it was through someone I knew! :P
Paper rounds, waitressing, lawn mowing, walking dogs etc
Get a paper round. When i was 12/13 I had one. Best job ever. I worked one day a week and got between £10 and £25 (depending on how many leaflets were with the paper). Its so easy and you can get another job at the same time

Hi, no you dont have to go to school to get experience they just do that to make sure you have atleast one place of experience to put on your cv,recently ive been looking for job but im under 16 and waiting for replis but in the supermarkets ive asked they all say they do experience and hir you if you do a good job so yeah just go into shops and ask for experince to add to your cv to get better paying jobs later x

first question: yes.

2nd question, generally. When applying alone, avoid using the words work experience and say volunteering or similar to improve chances.

Where did you come across this job?
unless you are in Thailand, eastern europe or Russia, there are no "jobs" for people your age.
I don't know how to work out the OP sex but I worked on a farm from being about 14 and that was £30 a day, it was hard work but great fun. If there are any farms near you might be worth a trip up.

Look in your local newspapers as they may advertise any positions in there (thats where I found mine). You can also go into the local newsagents and see if they do deliveries and if they need someone to deliver the papers.
If you really want to do then you have to go in open market and find job of your choice and definitely you will find because there is will there is way

normally if you ask a local newsagent if they need anybody for a paper round, they'll tell you they don't need anybody, but they'll record your name and phone number down to call you when they need somebody. I say keep trying. At 16, then you can try the bigger stores on the high street.
