Colleges

Hi.

I was just wondering, when you apply to York (as an undergraduate) do you have to state a college on your UCAS form or are you just assigned one if you are accepted?

I didn't find much information about colleges in the prospectus or on the website but I'm going to be visiting York tomorrow so I would like to take a look at the colleges if I need to pick one.

Any feedback would be really appreciated.

Thank you.

Cathy

You don't get to choose a college, you get assigned a college - and you belong to that college for all your time at york.

I've heard it said many times that the older and less aesthetically pleasing colleges tend to have the best college atmospheres - so they kind of balance out with the newer and "nicer" colleges.

hey

you're assigned a college when you're selected for accommodation. you find out nearer the start of term. as far as i know, you don't have to tell ucas or anything. they normally put you in a college near where your lectures are.

hope it helps!

You sure about that? If I remember correctly they stated on the form if you have any preference for a particular college and then in brackets it mentioned that the fact that a college is close to your lectures is not a valid reason.

I think they pay attention to your distance between college and lectures if you have a disability.

you're lectures are in college buildings you see, because its a campus university and everything is together. they try and put you in the accommodation thats near to the buildings your lectures are in, but they're all withing 10 mins walk or so anyway. you can put a preferance on your accommodation form, but thats for parking and en-suite and stuff like that. they try and put you near your lectures anyway so you don't have to put that. as far as i know anyway lol.

Are you sure? When I went to an open day we were told that they didn't like to put people in the same building as their department, because that encourages people to socialise with people doing other subjects.

they mix you up. all the colleges are near each other anyway so you get to meet lots of people.

Did you get a chance to see York??

my boyfriend started a degree there last year so i spent quite a lot of time on campus  i stayed with him a few times and walked around campus a lot, its gorgeous

I know they mix you up - I didn't mean that they don't put you with people from your department, I mean they don't put you in the same physical place as your department. I don't know how accurate that is, I'm just going off what I was told at the open day.

Is it after you have been accepted that you receive the accommodation form?

Just to develop on Dea's point that is indeed not true. You will often find you are near lectures but that's purely because its such a small uni. A lot of departments are in their own buildings now (only the Arts subjects are still in colleges along with Maths) which means you can't be in the same college. Traditionally I was told they tried not to put you too near your department as it encouraged having 2 different sets of friends.
There was a thread aaaaages ago, asking people what subject they did and what college they had been assigned to, and I noticed a correlation between English students and philosophy students, being assigned to Langwith and Derwent, which coincidentally are (I think) both close to the subject areas. So... make of that what you will - perhaps they do take into consideration what subject you do.

Well 3 people in my house did English and 3 people did History and those 2 are in Langwith and Vanbrugh respectively so I think any correlation is purely due to English being a massive department and Langwith and Derwent having a lot of rooms.

The thing is most English lectures aren't in Langwith, for a start it only has 2 lecture theatres and only 1 is big enough for an English lecture so most English lectures will be in Vanbrugh, Alcuin or Physics.

To whoever negged me for this post - why?

It's not true that they give you accommodation near your department, I lived in Alcuin and had lectures near James college which is just about as far away as you can get on campus! We were told they put a mix of subjects in each flat to get people to meet others who wern't from their course, like a few people have already said

They were probably negging you for something else that you've done somewhere, but couldn't find the right post.

Or they just don't like you.

I get that a lot.
In fact I just got one for this ^^ post, saying LOL @ U.

They can't have much rep. themselves though, 'cause it hardly took anything off.

Didn't take off much for me either - I wouldn't mind if they explained why and said who.
