Yes. You don't even need a degree.

It was designed to make specialists look like polymaths. In some sixth forms it is compulsory.

Mickey Mouse is feeling rather resentful btw. He says go and pick on Donald Duck or Winnie-the-Pooh for a change!

I wouldn't want to waste 3 years of my life and money studying surfing. But that's my opinion.

Sounds a damn good way to spend 3 years to me.
I do english lit, history and sociology at A level
and then took film studies as an extra AS
Im sure universities would rather i had an A in film then an E or less in something like maths!
I enjoy both my 'mickey mouse' subjects and as long as I do well thats all I care about.
I want to study history...so it shouldnt matter which other subjects i have as long as I have history and one other academic subject.

Hi people of the TSR, I have a question.

I'm about to start doing an Oxford open learning course to redo my A-Level grades which were very poor D's and E's for a number of reasons. I aim to get at least my predicted targets at college of C grades, and providing the universities recognise them hopefully land me a university place at some point in the future

If anyone can confirm they would be recognised that would be great.

Thats not my question however. I am indecisive in choosing which subjects to take, as I understand many courses in university are "Mickey Mouse subjects." For those not aware of the terminology, its a course where the end degree would have little or no relevant use in the real world. The subjects I take on the Open Learning course will influence which university courses I aim for.

The courses available are: Accounting, Business Studies, Chemistry, Economics, English Language, English Literature, French, History, Law, Maths, Pure Maths, Physics, Psychology, Sociology and Spanish.

I've heard from a few people Philosophy and Media Studies are Mickey Mouse courses, but I want to make sure. I know university is an experience in itself, but if the worst comes to worst and I dislike university I want to be motivated towards getting a good degree.

So what do you think of as a Mickey Mouse subject?

Thanks for listening to my life story there, and thanks in advance for any responses :tsr2:

With regard to the ones you've listed I wouldn't bother with the following at A Level: Accounting, Law, Psychology and Sociology. I'd also be somewhat wary about Business Studies and History.
As for the ones that would look best: Maths, Pure Maths, Chemistry and Physics but it really depends on what you plan on doing for your degree.

History is a 'Mickey Mouse' subject? When and by whom was that decided?

I said I'd be wary of it, I didn't say it's a Mickey Mouse subject.

In my opinion:

Mickey: These will actually harm your chances at Oxbridge
Accounting, Business Studies, English Language, Law, Psychology, Sociology

Semi-Mickey:These are neutral
Economics
English Literature

French
Spanish

Good:These will help with your Oxbridge application
History
Physics
Chemistry
Maths
Pure Maths

In summary, do the traditional subjects.
The non-traditional "new" subject are for slackers.

...and where did you get that list from? :s-smilie:

According to Cambridge Economics and English Lit are in the A List (Same list as Chem, Bio, Physics etc)

What are peoples views on Gov and Politics?

History is far from mickey mouse. Whoever thinks Economics is semi-mickey mouse - I would like to invite you to join MENSA.

I took 4 'Mickey Mouse' subjects at A-level, LOL good days.

Is health and social care classed as mickey mouse?

Government and Politics should be considered as respected since you need to have good English and analyical skills to gain a good grade at this subject. You must be able to make a persuaive argument but equally on both sides of a case in order to form a conclusion. It's a newer subject than History or English Literature but I believe it's on the same lines as for respectability goes.

Where's law?

At A level, I'd put it in the section known as pointless.

Thanks, but I an ex-Mensan (didnt renew my membership last year ). Not that it is a big deal.
I am pretty sure that there are a number of Mensans and ex-Mensans on the board.
Virtually anyone doing a reasonably challenging course at a decent university (Oxford, Cambridge, LSE ) would qualify for Mensa.
Tufts
And at degree level?

Seriously challenging.
Among the 4 most challenging courses in my opinion.
The others are Mathematics, Medicine and Philosophy.

In descending order of difficulty:
Mathematics
Medicine
Law
Philosophy
