If you're talking about the core course -- which is the A Course -- I have heard vague rumours from presentland that the core course for the English & American strand is combined with another strand's course. But don't quote me on this.

If you're talking about the optional C courses then thatfineframe's explanation sounds pretty plausible.

well according to this years handbook the American strand has a unique C core compulsory option that is not open to anyone else, but the handbook doesn't actually say what's on it even this year..which is why I was wondering

Hi everyone! I have a question about the academic conditions of my offer.
It says, 'This offer is not subject to any academic conditions but in order to complete your enrolment we
must view original copies of your academic transcripts. If you did not include original transcripts
with your application these should be forwarded to us as soon as they become available.'
So is it an unconditional offer? I found it curious because I am still completing my undergraduate degree.
Emailed the admission office to ask if it is a mistake and they simply said 'we need the transcript to confirm your admission'. Any ideas?

Thanks for mentioning the handbook, I hadn't even realised there was one available online. Pretty exciting to look through. Although I think I like one of the C courses a bit too much so may well be disappointed when I find they aren't running it this year...

My idea is that it means exactly what it says. Unconditional offers can be made to those still completing, one can speculate freely as to why your department may have done this.

There is a section on the University Accommodation application form where you can state that you are "unsure" of which college you will be at.

You can not reserve the University Accommodation until you are accepted by the College. You can apply, I guess.

Thanks to all for your helpful info/tips re living space etc.

For those who are interested, I asked my sister (the dietitian) re sunshine etc, and she agreed that it was Vitamin D (and laughed at me (nicely) for thinking B), and said it isn't found in sufficient quantity in any particular food to be of any help and so can't be naturally replaced, so if you're deficient, you should take a supplement.

I really really really want a college offer. I'm not good at waiting patiently. Just saying

I think a lot of people, particularly as they approach grad school, would be shifting address with a certain amount of frequency, so I agree that this apparent letter-by-post policy is pretty obsolescent.

Of course, from the colleges' perspective there is no rush to notify you, particularly as they don't usually require confirmation until much later in the year, and above all given that one is not usually in a position to reject a college offer without also rejecting one's university offer.

I agree, the colleges probably don't need to notify students for a while, especially as the website says a 6 week wait between an offer and a college offer is possible. I think perhaps they do stick to post first and foremost, especially if you're Home/UK, but the thing is, surely it is not an outlandish possibility, even if one isn't an Overseas student, that one may not be at their term-time address during a UK-wide university holiday period. As it stands, though, nothing for us to do but wait either way So long as there remains any available single accomodation by the time I have a college offer, that's good enough for me!

I _think_ everyone on my strand this year got their preferred optional courses, but I don't have any knowledge of general trends beyond that, unfortunately.

Oh no, thought I'd share my woe - just got an email from Merton saying I didn't get in I reaaaally hope that doesn't mean that I now won't go to an old college, that would be so disappointing! (ok, no it wouldn't really 'cause its still a miracle I got into Oxford, but still...)

hello everyone ! long time lurker , first time posting , tsr was giving me a bit of trouble , not authorizing me to post etc .. i had a couple of questions for people whove been at oxford awhile (since im coming there for my masters in september and don't know too much about living there) ..

So , because i didnt put in a college preference i got St.Hilda's and thats fine , but my dept is on banbury road and the maps tell me thats quite far. is that a big issue? how much time do grad students spend in the dept vs in college anyway ? and is it cheaper/more convenient to live on college property ? I was pretty sure i would chose living in college accommodation until i read my accommodation form carefully and it said from this year on , you must pay full time fees , during terms and vacations. boo. i'm an international student so i will be coming home in the holidays..what do you guys think about staying privately vs college ? oh also , is it possible to hold a part time job whilst studying ? I'm a yoga enthusiast and soon to be certified instructor , i was wondering if that would be of any use getting me a job in oxford. Ok , thats alot of questions ! will be glad if anyone has anything to say !

Hey everyone!

I had posted a few times before on this thread for the Egyptology MPhil, for which I was rejected. However, I just got an offer for classical archaeology! I had applied on a whim in March before hearing back for Egyptology, and apparently it's a good thing I did. I still can't really believe it, I only got an informal email saying that my official offer with academic conditions would follow. Did it happen to any of you?

So far, out of all the people I know who got pooled to another college, most tend to end up in graduate only colleges (Wolfson, Linacre, St Cross etc). Some go to less popular colleges like St Annes (which is a really nice college but a bit far out etc). I only know of one person who didn't get into her first choice and she ended up in Christ Church but she applied very very early (November) and she has a very prestigious scholarship and I suspect the only reason she didn't get into her first choice is because that particular college gets too many application for the same course and they capped the number of people they accepted from it.
