I am
I applied to St. John's. I wonder if anyone else has heard from them.
Hopefully you'll all hear soon!!!
I haven't, but I'd be interested to know if anyone has heard! Anyone?(Original post by Noldorin)
Have any March deadline people heard back yet about colleges, may I ask? -
Re: Oxford Graduate Application 2012/13Hey...when you say 'graduate admissions', I'm assuming you mean the department that made you the offer. The department response times would vary, based on the volumes they are dealing with. My department responded 10 days after I emailed them accepting their offer. Their response came long after the deadline for replying had passed. So I don't think you should worry about it. If it's worrying you, you could always call/email the department to confirm that they have received your acceptance and will respond to it in due course.(Original post by Marat)
Hey, did anyone receive some kind of confirmation or reply after emailing graduate admissions to accept the initial university offer?
(Emailed them a while ago, and as the deadline for replying is approaching, wanted to make sure I haven't messed something up) -
Re: Oxford Graduate Application 2012/13I can imagine how frustrating this must be! However, atleast it's not an outright 'no' and you still have a fighting chance. If I'm not mistaken, there are 2-3 applicants up-thread whose applications had been bumped into the next cycle and who were then made an offer. So don't give up hope yet.(Original post by Emu87)
I applied to Oxford last October and am STILL waiting to hear if I have got in or not. Each time an application round passed I simply got an email stating that my application was being bumped to the next application cycle. I am now going insane waiting to hear an answer from them. I emailed the department and was told that I should hear back this week but still haven't heard anything. It's starting to get quite stressful as Oxford is my first choice yet it's the last one to get back to me. I've already been given offers by Sussex, UCL and Cambridge but would happily give them up to go to Oxford.
I'm just wondering - is there anyone else here who is in the same position? Has anyone else here had their application bumped to the next round and then been given an offer?
Sorry for the rather long rant. I'm just starting to get really anxious!
Also, do you know which is the final admissions cycle for your department? That way, you would know that is the latest you could expect to hear a decision from them.
All the best! I hope you hear back with a positive decision at the earliest. -
Re: Oxford Graduate Application 2012/13
Hi all
Not to ignore the plight of those still waiting on course/college decisions, but I was wondering where we could get further details about, in particular, college accommodation. As I have no idea whatsoever about to expect as an incoming grad student at Christ Church. I am dreaming of something wonderfully luxurious, more as a form of escapism in response to the squalor of undergraduate life, but I am happy to have this vision shattered in exchange for a more realistic image.
I'm also keen to get some first-hand details about the student experience on the courses to which I've been admitted. Do you think I could get the departments to put me in touch with some of their current students? As I am finding that websites and reputation are not really much to go on when deciding where to spend the next year(s) of my life.
Thanks in advance for the help, much appreciated. -
Re: Oxford Graduate Application 2012/13Hey, thanks for the reply! Yeah, I meant the departmental admissions. It seems that Politics could be quite over-loaded now (still have the March decisions to send out I guess), I might just email them on the day before the deadline to make sure (if they have not replied before then).(Original post by Rams)

Re: Oxford Graduate Application 2012/13I'm going to email Balliol next week and check up on the status. I suspect my application has been passed on already. :-( Had no idea how hard it was to get in there at the time I applied!(Original post by GabrielleT)

Re: Oxford Graduate Application 2012/13All those with College places who are wondering about accommodation options - there is very little point is asking in here where we clearly have very few recent Oxford Grads to answer, especially as the housing stock in Colleges is extremely diverse so if it isn't their College they are unlikely to have much idea.(Original post by Palinurus)
..............
Once you have an offer of a College place, your best bet is to check the college website and get hold of one of the students on the MCR committee (or whatever your college calls its graduate student organisation). They will only be too happy to tell you about the options, costs, benefits, allocation process etc. -
Re: Oxford Graduate Application 2012/13Thanks! Will do.(Original post by threeportdrift)

Re: Oxford Graduate Application 2012/13Actually, I think this comment raises a more general question, and one about which I know surprisingly little, namely what is the precise function of a college in grad student life?(Original post by Shakesper)
Wish Ox allowed for you to state a second college choice like Cam does. Didn't get in at Magdalen, so now I'm being considered by Linacre.
Really sad. There are so many lovely old colleges in between the two on the spectrum. Wish we all could have more input into college placement. I'm so excited about my supervisor at Oxford, but hope the college selection doesn't make the choice between Universities even more difficult. Offer at St. Johns, Cam, so I've definitely got a strong pull there. Maybe Linacre doesn't have room for me--here's to hoping.
The impression I got was that the faculty/department was substantially more important academically as well as socially, and that as a grad student at an undergraduate college you could well end up living away from the main buildings and treated in other respects as being of secondary importance. Is college life actually a central part of the grad student experience? Do people tend to dine at formal hall and take part in MCR activities? Or is there too much variance between courses and colleges to generalise? -
Re: Oxford Graduate Application 2012/13Christ Church offers accommodation to most of its graduates. I don't live there but all the people I know do (I chose to live out even though I had an offer). The grad accommodation is right across the college so you have the advantage of being close if you choose to go for dinners etc. I think a good amount of grads go for dinner, especially those who live so close, because it is really cheap and convenient. I know that the kitchens at the accommodation are not great. They don't have freezers for example so it's gonna be difficult to cook on your own. But the general impression I got from old grads is that most of the times the majority of people don't really get involved. It's up to you though. I personally rarely even step foot at the college. I work at the faculty library and the bodleian and as I don't "live in" (meaning live in college) it's a hassle having to go there for meals.(Original post by Palinurus)
Thanks! Will do.
Generally there are a lot of events happening. There is a Sunday film evening in the GCR, a monday cake day where you go after formal and eat cake etc. -

Re: Oxford Graduate Application 2012/13As a grad, you are taught in your department, and therefore academically, your department is more important than your college. Some people will use their college libraries a lot, but others use the department or Bod. Socially, it varies. If you are on a small taught course then you might end up spending more time with people from your department. But if there is a good group of people in your MCR you may become good friends with them. Your college often provides accommodation, so you are likely to become friendly with the people that you live with. Your MCR will also organise events so can be quite sociable.(Original post by Palinurus)
