I know that sometimes in the smaller colleges the porters lodges aren't open on Sundays but if it says that your contract runs from the 15th then I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to show up then. You could email the accommodation officer of your college and ask. Worst case scenario you'd have to stay in a hostel for a night (which could be an interesting experience!).

    Hope this helps somewhat
    Thanks!

I was wondering, am I alone in not having received any information from the English department i.e. breakdown of costs, reading lists, in fact any documents at all apart from the college financial guarantee forms. I'm still an undergrad (for a few more weeks!) so not sure how the grad system works, but is it unusual not to hear from the department in this way?
Drop the department an email if you're really worried, but last year the reading lists definitely didn't go out this early, so I doubt anything is wrong.

Finally heard from a college via email on 1st June. It's Christ Church!

So relieved - I've been feeling incredibly unwanted recently.
Congrats! You're a lucky person no doubt. It's a very nice college I hear; quite arguably the most famous too.

They're quite exclusive too; not only in the fields of study Christ Church covers, but you'll be rubbing shoulders with British aristocracy. I'm sure there will be a warmer and more welcoming non-aristocratic part to the college life too, though!

Hmm. Are there a certain number of colleges one can be rejected from before one is pretty much compelled to give you an offer?

I'm not convinced ChCh actually has a higher proportion of toffs than any other college these days. But, in any case, they won't be rubbing shoulders together unless they're coursemates on the MSc in Massage Studies.

I'm sure Oxford will do a better job of it!
Haha, yeah sometimes when I have stupid questions about Oxford in my head I just think that it'll be like my undergrad university but shinier and with some ridiculous tradition on top.

Oh seriously, shut up. Have you even been there?

I know several ChCh'ers and often spend time there/passing through, can't really think of a more misguided stereotype to be honest.

quite rightly so. Perhaps it's more pronounced in undergrad but for postgrad most of us are internationals anyway.

Thanks! I'm just relieved after the torturous months of waiting.

Will you be going up to Oxford too; if so which college?

Hah, I do take it you have heard of that expression, and are just being flippantly literal...

There is still a slightly higher proportion there I hear, though I agree, the anomaly isn't anything like it used to be even 50 years ago.

No, but it's certainly a statistically verifiable assertion. Unlike your "oh I know several", I'm afraid; that comment was priceless.

Also, I was hardly saying they're *all* aristocrats; just a relatively high proportion. That you jumped to take offence when evidently it was a matter-of-fact comment is not becoming. At best, it betrays some prejudice against the gentry that you might have.

Oh I'm sorry, what does the Englishman know about his country's institutions and society? I should clearly let the Greek boy speak.

Yes, I know the feeling! It's only been a couple of months for me, but I was talking to a poor soul here earlier who had to wait about five,

I have indeed accepted my place, though alas no college offer yet. In all fairness, I'm sure the social life and our postgraduate peers are comparably estimable at any college... yet I'm still hoping for a "good" college, whatever that means.

All the best with that. Was it IT or Computer Science that you're studying?

Thanks. You're not far off. It's (pure) mathematics, with a leaning towards theoretical computer science. The oddly-titled MFoCS.

I've had to bin the squabble that took place in here recently. Users are required to keep things civil and on topic, and not to personally attack others. Failure to adhere to these rules will result in penalties.
If anybody starts making national stereotypes again, I would be grateful to other thread users if you could report the posts please. Thankyou.
