Yeah, I mailed in my student contract about a week ago and received an email with my IT info soon afterward. It was quite a quick turnaround after I sent it in. There's some interesting stuff to look at on Weblearn, but nothing crucial yet. (Just stuff from last year, which is helpful, but nothing for this year.)
Ah, have you guys got the 2011-12 outline of the course online?

Have you checked which colleges support your course? As far as I know Material Science is not supported by all colleges but a few I know are Oriel, Wolfson, Linacre, St. Peter, Corpus Christi, Champions Hall.... Although with regards to the last one I am not quite sure.

I think Linacre is a nice one because it´s all graduates and has nice facilities. Nonetheless, I guess that´s just my opinion.

Hi Toni. Thanks for your reply. Yeap I've already checked what colleges accept my course. I've narrowed it down to these colleges: Corpus Christi, Exeter, Hertford, Lincoln, Mansfield, Oriel, Queen's, St Anne's, St Edmund Hall,Trinity. Do you if these colleges have good food and nice gardens? I'm really picky when it comes to food. :eating:

Yeah, forget food, make sure the college you choose is interested in your field of study, otherwise they will simply reject you. Also try not to choose the most oversubscribed ones, like Magdalen, otherwise they will also likely reject you and you might end up getting stuck with something not nearly as nice as you would like.

Once you are offered college - this is it, you can not change it any more, so if you are rejected by your first choice you can only hope for the best. On the other hand if you make your first choice wisely and select a college that is not too oversubscribed and has interest in your field you are more likely to get in.
Hi janjanmmm. Thank for your reply. I've already checked
These is the list of colleges that accepts my course: Corpus Christi, Exeter, Hertford, Lincoln, Mansfield, Oriel, Queen's, St Anne's, St Edmund Hall,Trinity. Are they any good in terms of food and gardens? I know that you can't change it after you've been offered. That's why I'm trying to find one that really suits me. Any idea? Thanks.

    Hey ...

In your list Linacre is missing It´s a Grads only college. It is known to have great food. That´s one of the things the college is very proud of. Beside the fact that it´s a ´green´ college. Moreover it´s situated opposite the University parks.

I am about to join the college in October. Can´t wait to go there. Hopefully the accommodation is fine. Anyone else joining Linacre this year???

    Regards

I prefer to go to a college with undergrad and grad students. So Linacre is not on my list. I did a little research on the internet, I think Trinity might be good for me. I heard the chefs there are good.

So I visited my college yesterday and I absolutely hated it. I hated it so much that it makes me want to not go to Oxford. So I'm asking if anyone has any experience or knowledge of if it is possible to change colleges. I'm not doing this becauce I want to change to one of the big, famous ones. I'll change to ANY other college or PPH. I'll take anything. Does anyone know if it's possible?

Which college is that? And I'm afraid that unless you have serious medical reasons it's not possible to change.

Just checked, and it's st cross right? What did you hate that much? I had a couple of friends there and no one complained. It's in a great location, really close to the classics faculty and generally close to many nice places and if I remember correctly it doesn't look bad either.

I think I may have just caught them on a bad day yesterday. I also met an extremely rude student there and it's put me right off the place. I was also generally uncomfortable with it because it none of its fellows are in the classics faculty and it has a pretty poor library.

Although as you said already, I just called the grad office and they confirmed that it's unlikely that I'll be able to change.

The fact that there are no classics fellows makes no difference really. I only met one of the classics fellows of my college and that's because he also happened to be my tutor for a module which is unrelated to me being in the same college.
As for the library, although it is useful having a good college library, it really doesn't make a huge difference. Your college is 5 minutes away from the Bod and the Sackler and no matter how good your college library is, as a graduate student you will mainly use the Sackler anyway.
I think you are too quick to judge. Just because one student was annoying this doesn't mean everyone is. I'm sure all colleges have rude students
Just be a bit more positive and don't go there expecting to hate it and you ll be fine.

You make a fair point. Plus I think the more important thing is that I enjoy the degree. The college is secondary. Thanks

I know two people doing DPhils at St Cross btw in Classics (well, one in Classical Reception and the other in the bronze age Aegean and Egypt) and both are pretty happy with it. Sure, the library is not Classically themed but as Corinna said you have the Sacks and the Bod nearby as well as the Archaeology Institute's library and the Classical Faculties reading room (which can be indispensable). I think the accomm is relatively decent too, but don't hold me to that.

May I ask why you want to be in a college with undergrads during your DPhil? Generally, tell us what you´re expecting from your college. Is it all about reputation or history of the college??? That would help to narrow down your choices...

Hello, I'm also studying the 1550-1700 strand of the English Mst. Lincoln College. Glad to know that no one else has received the reading list yet. I am yet to receive the final contract so I don't have access to the old reading list, could some one possibly send it to me?

Also - has anyone received accommodation offers from Lincoln yet?

    Thanks,

    Adam

Hello Swires-Adam . If you check the faculty website, there's a copy of last year's course details and some reading lists. Here's the link - http://www.english.ox.ac.uk/sites/de...12%20Final.pdf

This will probably sound quite silly, but where do I sign on after getting my IT stuff - I only know how to get into the mail, not into the course blackboard/vle area

I got waitlisted at Pembroke and I'm looking for accommodation, looking for something that is walking distance to the campus, and furnished. Any advice, info, recommendations, at all would be extremely appreciated, as I'm an international student and I'm getting really worried.

I really wouldn't worry too much about the fellows or the library. There were no IR fellows in my college (there were politics professors) but it makes no difference really, as you are taught in your department. I spent most of my time in the departmental library as it had more books - and better chairs! Oxford has so many libraries that you don't need to worry too much.
