Re: Books You Couldn't FinishYes, "try, try try- or you'll never get to catch that fly". From a song off the children's video "Spider In The Bath".(Original post by ukebert)
I've read the Idiot and Crime and Punishment, but Brothers Karamazov defeated me; probably because at the time I was reading it in snatches: not a particularly good way to proceed with a book like that. I'll try again before long.
Did anyone else watch that when they were younger? *Hums tune and remembers*.
EDIT: Comment made in sleepiness.

Spider in the bath.
A creepy, crawly, creepy, crawly spider in the bath.
I know he's only there because he wants to have a laugh.
With hairy legs and big [something] eyes
And [something] [something] [something] surprise!
Spider in the bath!"
AWESOME SHOW. -

Re: Books You Couldn't Finish
1984, George Orwell. Tried, stuck with it for a good bit, but failed miserably. Plan on going back to it again at some point, but dread the thoughts of it as I'd say I was about half way through, but it was so long ago I know I'll have to read that first half again...
Daniel Derona, Mansfield Park, Emma to name a few others. Classics in general. These time periods and authors absolutely fascinate me, and I love their romantic writing style and plots, but I just can never seem to finish them.

Re: Books You Couldn't Finish
Vanity Fair, I simply couldn't get through it. It's a monster of a book, and whilst the plot sounds fantastic (Cheated and read the synopsis on Wiki after I gave up) it takes so long and if you try and skip a few pages you're totally lost, yet in those few pages you haven't actually been told anything of significance. Part of me really wishes they'd bring out edited versions of the old classics.
Learning the Law, admittedly not fiction, but this seems so boring at times, but a Cambridge graduate with a first in Law told me he couldn't get through it, which made me feel a lot better.
His Dark Materials, I attempting reading the first, but ugh!! I think I'm just not that partial to fantasy, yet I like Harry Potter. -
Re: Books You Couldn't FinishI got halfway through Vanity Fair, then gave up!! It was just so slow. The movie is 2 hours 15, and that is long enough (even though much easier to watch through than read the book). Same has happened to Villette (Charlotte Bronte), i've just put it down and i was over two thirds through, i just can't bring myself to finish it.. it seems i would be reading it forever!(Original post by Mikimoto)

Re: Books You Couldn't FinishI quite enjoyed those two, actually. Vanity Fair isn't exactly action-packed, but I've read slower books - and I actually rather liked the cynicism. As for Villette, it was a bit strange, but overall, I think I preferred it to Jane Eyre. Although Lucy Snowe is a horrible person and really deserves to be unhappy...(Original post by ladydeborah)

Oh well, tastes just differ, I suppose.

Re: Books You Couldn't FinishOh dear, it's been a while since I last read it, actually... Do you remember which chapter it was (roughly)?(Original post by ladydeborah)

Edit: Or did you mean that bit when she meets Ginevra Fanshawe?Last edited by hobnob; 13-10-2007 at 22:55. -
Re: Books You Couldn't FinishI think I was far too young when I attempted to read it; I'd say I was only about 14/15, and reading it for the wrong reasons (in that the 'Big Brother' concept had been based on it - yes very silly)(Original post by vector)
You couldn't finish 1984? That's unbelievable. You NEED to go back to it; you're missing out ;yes;
Now that I'm older and more appreciative of literature I'd love to go back to it, but you know when a dislike is stuck in your head... like how you can never brussel sprouts simply because your mother forced you to as a kid... -
Re: Books You Couldn't Finish
I really couldn't get into Catcher in the Rye. I got about halfway through and it didn't go anywhere or do anything! So so boring.
I also didn't like Lady Chatterly's Lover or other DH Lawrence stuff either. Or 1984.
Spider is without a doubt one of the best kids' TV shows ever
We have it on video.

Mais oui; d'accord!
Good; me too!

I haven't found any Orwell books I don't like ;no;
