The "Ask a Current Student" Thread :)
Welcome to the University of Durham forum: where prospective and current students can discuss everything from the differences between colleges to the nightlife, an abundance of Rahs to the Stockton campus.

Re: The "Ask a Current Student" Thread :)
Are college fees for catered accommodation the same for every college?
Van Mildert hasn't updated it yet for the 2012/13 academic year but I assume they're the same as others who have updated it?
Also, with the 33 week let do you have to move out at the end of each term? It says you're given storage which implies you need to move your stuff out of the rooms? -
Re: The "Ask a Current Student" Thread :)Yes, fees are the same at all colleges.(Original post by Brand New Eyes)

You have to move out at Christmas and Easter. At Christmas you can leave all your stuff in the room (tidy, so the cleaners can get at the floor and surfaces, but you can leave things hanging up in the wardrobe or on shelves and the bed made); at Easter you have to pack everything into a bedbox (in the room) or take it to another room in college for storage. Either way you don't have to take everything home
No! Freshers' week is quite a lot about drinking, but there are loads of societies which don't involve drinking and there are other college events (especially post-exams). You'll definitely be able find a group of non-drinking or moderately-drinking friends(Original post by Dan4444)

You can go to other lectures, but not seminars/tutorials/lab sessions etc - although there aren't many who do!(Original post by zahab)

Just to add to Aimee's post, there are also university-wide LGBT nights at various venues - I don't know how often, though.(Original post by Adam_x)

I'm not totally clued up on the LGBT side of things. But I do know that there is a thriving LGBT association with reps in each college. Events and socials are put on quite often which usually look pretty good. And yes there are "real gay couples" around Durham. -
Re: The "Ask a Current Student" Thread :)It varies from college to college. Although some colleges allow you to leave the room tidy over Christmas others (eg St. Aidan's) will insist you pack everything up in the lockable storage areas under the bed. It depends whether they want your room for anything while you're away. There is a lot of storage space under the bed so it's not usually a problem.(Original post by Brand New Eyes)

Re: The "Ask a Current Student" Thread :)I can probably answer a bit better.(Original post by Adam_x)
How's the LGBT atmosphere there?Have you guys seen real gay couple in campus?
The LGBT scene in Durham doesn't exactly thrive, but is a lot stronger than it used to be - there's a university-wide LGBTa who organise campaigns, representation and socials, LGBT reps at college and DSU levels, a new weekly club night in the Vaults, and a newly opened cabaret/drag club on North Road.
General atmosphere from the student body is pretty chilled - I've met very people who care at all what leanings someone night have, and I'm unaware of any hostility at all in the city. -

Re: The "Ask a Current Student" Thread :)Assuming you're not here yet.. Your ITS username is what you will use to log in to things like emails, DUO, parts of your jcr website, past exam papers etc etc- If i remember right it's emailed to you at some point over the summer holidays, probably after results day- you shouldn't need it yet(Original post by pai2502)
What is a Durham ITS username? Where can I get it? -
Re: The "Ask a Current Student" Thread :)
For all LAW STUDENTS in Durham, I have a few questions, if anybody is able to answer them
Any contribution you have would be greatly appreciated
1. What sort of feedback do you get for exams? Do you find it useful?
2. What are tutors like? Like are they approachable, engaging, etc.
3. Is there any chance that the pro-bono society is thinking of setting up a legal advice centre?
Thank you so much in advance! xxx -
Re: The "Ask a Current Student" Thread :)Based on the UCAS choices in your signature, I think you may be on the wrong thread. This one is for questions for current Durham University students.(Original post by EhsanA)
Have any student here done a degree (or in the process) by starting on foundation year?

Re: The "Ask a Current Student" Thread :)dur.ac.uk/dates/ says that 'Induction Week' starts on the 1st of October, so I think that'll be when you arrive. Although I'm really quite surprised there's so little information on the topic.(Original post by Brand New Eyes)
Hi!
Sorry if this has been asked before but when does freshers week start i.e. what day do we move in!?

Thank you! -
Re: The "Ask a Current Student" Thread :)I believe it starts on the 1st October and then lectures should be starting on the 8th. Hoorary for getting a full freshers week this year :P You'll probably move in on Sunday 30th September if it's similar timings to last year. Excting stuff!(Original post by Brand New Eyes)

Although be warned I know a lot of the departments are planning to give you lots of lovely introductory talks during the day - so you will get freshers activities for a week (or just over) but you will have stuff to do during the day as well.

Re: The "Ask a Current Student" Thread :)
Students who have done/are doing the BSc Anthropology program at Queen's, I have a question for you. Would you say the program is mainly Biological Anthropology or more of an even mix of Social and Biological?
I keep seeing it being referred to as a Bio Anth program but someone at the department told me it's just an Anthro course which is just a bit more Biological but has a lot of Social. -
Re: The "Ask a Current Student" Thread :)Hi, you can see the modules in a lot of detail here. It is called BSc Biological anthropology so I would think it'd be mainly focused on that. Click on the module codes to get info about each module.(Original post by fbear)
