I read this recently, which shows that Durham is one of the most conservative universities in the country. As a committed left-winger study politics, I'm a little worried that I won't fit there and that it'll be full of tories. Does anyone have any perspective on this?

Students in general are liberal. Durham being more conservative than elsewhere still makes it more liberal than most of the country.

Unless you're the sort of person who brings up politics all the time, you're unlikely to know which way your friends vote. If you do want to get involved, I'm fairly sure that all the major political parties have student societies (the labour societies are particularly active). Most of my friends are left of centre, and those who do vote Tory are just as sane as anyone else.

Honestly, I think that link is making a big deal out of nothing. If you like Durham, come to Durham. You might not fit in with the rahs but you'll find plenty of people who think like you.
I was wondering because I would like to study Geography ( BSc ), would it be helpful if I took Statistics (Advanced Higher)? Anyone fellow geographers at Durham who could help me out a bit would be highly appreciative! 😊
Does Durham care massively about GCSEs?

I am a committed socialist and have firmed Durham. You will always find people who think like you, it's not a reason to not go to Durham.

Depends a lot on which subject you are applying for, but generally you'd be looking at having majority As and A*s for the most competitive subjects

How difficult is to secure a parking permit as an undergrad?

In first year quite tricky, if you are living in college it would be discouraged (unless you have a good reason) because space is so limited. It would be easier once you move out and you could most likely get on road parking permit near your house quite easily.

However Durham is very small and you can walk anywhere you need to go so (unless there is a medical reason etc) I wouldn't suggest there would be much need for a car, though handy for trips to 'big tesco' and aldi!

Is the Modern Language degree considered "competitive"? I know that it's very competitive in terms of universities, but is it a prestigious course at Durham?
1) What do you guys love the most about Durham (both the campus and the town)

2) Are rahs that bad at Hatfield (so far this is my favourite college)

3) Any economics students and friends of one?? What's a day like in your life??

Thank you!!

The modern language course at Durham is prestigious compared to the modern language courses at other universities, if that's what you're asking?

I love walking through the old town and the people the most I think, and of course KLUTE.
Rah's are rah's, hatfield has a slightly higher percentage but they're mostly not that relevant if you're not friends with them or whatever.
I'm friends with a economics student and it is pretty much the same as the day of any other students, they have around 15 contact hours I think, but they have lectures and tutorials the same as everyone else.
What's the tennis like at Durham? I would like to be able to play regularly; is it a big sport there? thanks

I'm quite late to this but:

1- College system means you have a community you can get involved with, you meet a lot of people, there's always something going on in college or Uni-wide, so many societies, it's a safe city and I really enjoy the clubbing, it's legit beautiful - you sometimes have moments of wow. I've just finished second year, sometimes it's frustrating to have to go to Newcastle for bigger things, but I wouldn't choose to go to a bigger city, and Newcastle is very accessible by train.

2- It has a reputation, and you probably have to be able to deal with gentle teasing... but I know a lot of lovely Hatfielders, so I suspect that if you end up there you'll find your people!
Hi all,

I'm a blind EU student and am interested in applying to Durham. Does anyone here have experience of the university's disability support system?

Durham is absolutely huge for sport - it's a central part of life on a college and uni level. Can't speak for tennis as such but Grey College has it's own tennis courts that college members can use!

Hey - I wondered that too. In my offer letter it says to confirm 'as soon as you receive this letter' but I'm going to sleep on it; I'm sure my place will still be there in the morning! Congrats btw
