huddersfield music student, first year, no accomadation!!! help!!

ok, this is how it goes.

I live in Golborne, a little village near warrington and not far from wigan (for any rugby fans out there) and I'm doing a music degree, and looking forward to it. Problem is, I have no accomadation and the maintenance loan I'm getting won't cover the cost for weekly rents, just for train fares. Thus I will have to commute an hour to huddersfield on the train, most days (assuming I'm there everyday). Need some advice of people about commuting as moving away just doesn't seem much of an option at the moment and I'm really worried I'll miss freshers week and not make friends as easy due to living away:frown: :frown: please, some helpful advice wouldn't go amiss

p.s only just found this site, thats why I've only just posted or would have done it earlier in the week!!
Not much you can do to be honest, i'm not really suprised you can't afford the first year accomodation if you are paying for it yourself as Storthes Hall for example is over £3000 for 10 months.

Theres not much you can do to be honest, if i were you i would inform your tutors and lecturors etc about your position as they will have to understand if a train is delayed or doesnt show up. I know a few people that commute from the Doncaster area and they get in almost evryday so hopefully for you it won't be so bad either.

You could always try and get a room in a house there are still quite a few available around Huddersfield, go to www.accomodationforstudents.com select Huddersfield and go to the noticeboard this is where fellow students and landlords will advertise rooms they have available, rents vary obviously but you should be able to get a room for about £50 a week which you would just be able to afford and live. You will just have to mull over your finances and see whats viable for you, can your parents help you out?

With regards,
Mat

hey,

my parents could help me out and maybe spare a bit a month, but being a music student I have a load of instruments and at week end i have a decent job (which with the moeny I make goes towards trains) and I would feel uncomfortable leaving them aloone and by themselves and don't want to give up me job. Biggest fear is that I won't go socialising and making friends :frown:

mate dont you get a grant?
the reason i ask is i get the loan and a 2700 grant to pay for my living costs.
which means i can pay my accomadation and have like 900 pound to live off for the term.
As far as i know everyone whose parents earn under 20,000 get that due to the new top up fees. Heres the point though. When you fill your form out with student finance they ask if you want to apply for non income assessed or income assessed finance.
Last year my loan and grant entitlement went off my mums earnings.
But this year i rushed the form and ticked i wanted a non income assessed loan which means im not entitled to the grant. ive had to resubmit my form so they can re assess my mums income for the grant.
I dont know how much your parents earn but if you know its under 20,000 pounds you should be entitled to the grant which would solve all your problems.
Check your to see if your forms filled out correctly and if it isnt resubmitt it saying you want to be Income assessed.
sorry this was long winded and hope it helps
