Our tent was burgled on Friday evening between 3 and 5am whilst we were in there sleeping... The thief took off his shoes (!), climbed over us and through the entire thing to the other end to grab my friend's bag and take the cash from her purse, stole my other friend's cash from her purse and then proceeded to rob/attempt to rob all the tents around ours too. My money was in the pocket of my anorak which was one of the 6 layers I was wearing to keep warm, so Mr Thief got nothing from me. None of our phones were stolen (although they're all so very old and crappy that you'd have to pay people to take them off you
), nor was anything else (cash cards, alcohol, food, HMV vouchers) taken despite an extensive rummage through our belongings, so whoever it was was literally just after money (and very likely hig on something). We all slept through the entire things and discovered that we'd been robbed at 5 in the morning - we found out that we weren't the only ones when the people around us woke up at about 9am. When reporting it to the police, we found loads of people with similar stories in different fields.
I think we were slightly unlucky in that there were 3 of us in a 4 man tent so there was enough space to enter without waking us up - they opened other tents in our camping circle, but couldn't physically get in to steal anything. I still can't believe that none of us woke up, although I'm very glad that that was the case!
I wouldn't advise taking anything valuable to Reading, but if you do then don't leave it in your tent unless it's locked. I would also strongly recommend locking your tent from the inside at night, keeping all valuable stuff on your person and filling it with the right number of people
. However whilst it wasn't a nice thing to happen, it wasn't then end of the world or anything and we all had an absolutely amazing time so don't be put off and definitely go next year! Also, bring wellies because they are absolute godsend
