Right as a graduate of Pharmaceutical Science I think i'm most qualified to say. Right if you want to be a drug designer the main course you will want to look for is either Pharmaceutical Science or Medicinal Chemistry. You could do pharmacology but that mainly deals with the effects of drugs not the actual synthesis and manufacture of drugs, so in fact if you did Pharmacology you would be at a slight disadvantage, however there is still the possibility that you could become a drug designer. I would highly recommend med chem. or pharm sci.

Do not do Pharmacy! it has nothing to do with drug design

Why are you doing a chemistry degree?

Why are you doing a chemistry degree?

Because I wanted to broaden my chemical knowledge and allow me to look for a career thats not exclusively pharmaceutical

why do you ask?

I have no idea, I only went to Portsmouth which in fact has an amazing pharmacy and biomedical sciences school

Pure chemistry, not pharmacology, you need to get the basics right first, before you go on to specialise.

Some univerisites do pure chemistry with a minor in medicinal chemistry, I would consider something like that.

Don't dismiss Biochemistry either.

agreed
Pharmacology, synthetic chemistry or certain types of theoretical chemistry (Quantitative Structure Activity Relationships to be precise).
i would strongly suggest chemistry, as the design of drugs mainly focuses on their structure, pharmacy/ pharmacology/medicine imo wont be as useful. It mite also be useful to consider biochemistry, especially as if you find it more interesting, as nowadays as most small molecule drugs (aspirin etc) have already been discovered and developed, theres more r&d in large protein based drugs (such as herceptin). IMO thats where the future lies too.

(chem is always gd)

hope thats helpful.
