Hi, I'm just a little confused about a bit of information and was wondering if anyone could help?

It is not on the specification but I have it in my notes, so I'm not sure if everyone will have done it.

For rod cells in the retina:

'A number of rods form an inhibitory synapse with a bipolar cell"
I don't understand how this work as we know: when several rods are stimulated by a weak stimulus they all converge onto 1 bipolar cell. Neurotransmitter summate (spacial) to produce an action potential in the bipolar cell.

S what is the relevance of the inhibitory synapse?!
