Student Who Needs to find his Right Role

Over the last few weeks as a fresher studying Modern History and Politics I have been having troubles with the fact I cant find what I should do and aim for in life which I see as important for the next 3 years in order to prepare myself for the 'right' job.

As you'll see my main aim is to find something that not only makes some sort of difference but find something that gets to the bottom of how the world is run.

My selection includes: law, civil service preferably in relation to the diplomatic serice, Army officer or Journalist. But with each of these I cant seem to find the perfect match to all my interests.

I was hoping someone could maybe provide some advice on how to find your so called 'role' in life.

Thanks

Get yourself along to http://www.limun.org.uk and see if international relations is your thing.

In terms of the civil service, the diplomatic service is extremely competitive - reading between the lines I'm saying that it's useful to have a fallback plan if the diplomatic service is your thing but you don't get in. (I failed to get into the diplomatic service at a grade above my existing civil service grade but got into the inservice fast stream 2 grades above and with just as many opportunities for foreign travel.)

It's also worth looking at a short-term commission in the Army or in the TA before going into the civil service - esp. the MoD. The problem with the whole of the civil service is that many of the policy makers (myself included) don't have sufficient experience of frontline operations. If you've got that, you'll find your skills and experiences highly sought-after.

In terms of journalism, gain a specialist skill in a given area, whether it's on a country or an ara of interest. You can do journalism conversion courses but it's worth, especially at your time at uni to do some writing for student newspapers and local newspapers and magazines - and to put together a personal portfolio.

QUB has an OTC mate. Basically a TA for the students. It's just down the malone road from Elms village, about 300 metres. You can't miss it, it's got big blue gates, it's like a barracks. You could join it (no strings attached) and see if you would like a career in the army/forces.
