Do roots make soil more acidic?

When i went on a field trip to Betws-y-Coed, i was told that roots in my soil samples would make the soil more acidic, and ive mentioned this in my coursework, but i didnt get the marks for it as i didnt explain why. I cant find ANYTHING to explain why they make the soil more acidic, can someone tell me why please?

Is it something to do with the mineral ions that plants absorb through their roots (through either facilitated diffusion or active transport - I can never remember which)?
