Hey  How are you treated on placement generally? Are the 'proper' radiotherapists nice to you or do they get you doing all the menial work?

Hello All

Anyone going to Derby for Diagnostic Radiography ?

I've had an offer and currently reviewing the finances to see if I can afford to be poor for 3 years.

Does anyone have any feedback regarding Derby Rad. ?

Did anyone have any strange experiences during their interviews at uni ?

I did but thats for another day

Just got confirmation for spending a day in a therapy department near here, woo hoo

Hey,

Suek, how long did it take you to arrange your clinical visit?

I rang my local Radiotherapy department today. They gave me to e-mail this lady there. Now waiting for a reply.....hope they hurry up! lol

Well, initially I was looking at diagnostics and I basically called/emailed ALL the local hospitals  which led to me getting a placement from one VERY fast and another quickly followed.

Therapy was tougher - though I got to visit the Marsden quite easily but that was just an escorted visit, so a couple of hours.

I had a really informative/useful time at the Royal Surrey County Hospital if you can get there, in Guildford. Again I've got a contact there if you can make it to them  It took a bit to sort - had to go in for a little chat, fill in some forms etc, but was well worth it.

Do you mean St Luke's Cancer Centre in Guildford? Guildford is good for me  Can you please PM me the contact details there

I'm leaving Marsden to last. Been there once with work, really liked it but too scared they will recognise me :-S
So far i have been treated very well though i have mixed reports from other students on rotation on different departments. Basically i have been in A&E for my time so far and the girls and guys down there are lovely. They have let me be very hands on and do lots of xrays but also said that i should only do what i feel comfortable doing and that if i needed any help dont be afraid to ask. They didnt push me into it or force me to do any xray i didnt want to and were happy to explain things too me.
In the general department though i think this may be a little different as it is older radiographers down there (the A&E crew were quite young) and from what i can gather they arnt so keep on you jumping in and doing as much, however i am certainally going to ask as i am not on placement to stand and watch im there to do!
I havent had any real menial work other than a few card fetching errands and have been treated as a complete equal the entire time which has helped my confidence immensely.
As i said im expecting the main department to be slightly different but then again i could be proved wrong.
so far so good

what kind of grades in gcse's and alevels did u guys/girls get?
Reply 67
GCSE - A*A*A*A*AAAAAAAA
AS - AAABC
A2 - AABD

And this year i'm doing Psychology and Sociology ASs just to get back into it a bit, got A/B in first modules

The requirements for entry are quite a bit under that though, usually more like BBB-CCD or so, CCC is the most common really though mostly it's points based 200-300 but with flexibility to include ASs.

Most of the places I've visited are more interested in finding the right sort of person rather than just academics. It's not like a lot of courses, as there's always going to be an interview component, where grades sift the field a lot more.
will second that, most places the grades are not the B all and end all they are a guide and if something goes wrong or whatever then chances are you will still get on the course as it isnt as overly subscribed as say something like physio.
They want to make sure you are a people person and you are right for the job more than anything

In 2004 I did General Studies, English Language & Literature, Human Biology and Chemistry with I.C.T as an AS Level

This year I got unconditional offers from Portsmouth, St George's and Sheffield Hallam. I got an interview at Liverpool but I actually withdrew, and a Conditional offer from Cardiff - CC in AS Levels.

Hi, i was wondering to you think it is too late to apply for a place on a radiography course? Will they have filled up already? And do international students have to attend an interview????

Definitely not too late! I was emailing people in July last year and they said I could still apply! Email unis you are interested in.

As for interview, not sure  maybe telephone? Ask

hey lindabar, i see you are from ireland too, i am also wanting to apply to radiography but feared i was too late this year and was planning to wait til following year. someone on a placement suggested i should give it a go anyway and might be possible in clearing to get aplace. im still not sure what to do on it, as i would like to get started on it as soon as possible. im 26, be 27 by sept , or 28 if i have to wait a further yeaer, i know its not ancient but i do think try to think ahead of my age when i graduate, so id like to get started asap , also iv been toying around with idea of radiography /physio for a few years now ever since i finished my original degrree, and now iv finally decided to go for it , i am excited about it and want to get started and moving on it, i feel iv waited on it long enough. but im afraid il look unorganised and bad management by applying late. so im not sure what il do on it.

i hope you manage to work it out, let me know how you get on, im finding not knowing anything about uk system such as ucas , and uk uni's , difficult to get my head around.

You guys have NOTHING to lose by applying now. When I emailed around the unis, Salford, Teesside, Derby all told me they still had places for instance. I'm sure others did too, but since I said I was applying for 2008 others probably didn't even consider it.

GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!

The WORST they can do is say "Sorry we're full, try again next year" which you'd have to do anyway if you waited!

would i be best to email /ring around uni's im interested in before doing ucas form ? probably not much point putting down uni's in case they are filled already.
Reply 76
Email or phone would be good, either, or both!

Shows you are eager  For mature students, being late with the form isn't so bad because it's not like most mature students are lliving life according to the academic year like A Level students, where it is more likely to just be laziness that delays things, or indecision.

Really, go for it! What sort of places are you interested in?

Hi **R** lol

I think I am in a similar situation to yours. I am also interested in applying for therapeutic radiography. My initial thoughts were to apply for Sept 08 start but I've come to the conclusion that financially I can only do it in Sept 09. So I have to try and make as much money byt then lol.

I think you mentioned in your post that you already hold a degree? Well so do I. I did my first degree in Pharmacology. Really interesting stuff but didn't really give me any job prospects. Several universities in the UK offer an accelerated 2 year programme for graduates that want to study radiography. I suggest you look in to that because it saves you a year at uni, and you will graduate a year younger! I'm interested in studying at South Bank because its close to where I live at the moment. I think they are still receiving applications and there is an open day on 23rd April.

I know what you mean about the age tho..... if I start the course in Sept 09 then I will be 28 when I qualify and that's a bit of a bum! But its definetly better late than never!!

You only need to apply thru UCAS if you are applying for a 3 year degree. The application process is really easy (done it with my first degree). And you need a reference from somebody at work or previous uni.

So what did you study for your first degree? What are you doing now?

hi ella thanks for all that. my degree was in English and Sociology. loved it v interesting but pointless for the job market. iv been working in offices mainly and also computer training too. i didnt mind first year or two out of colllege but its going nowhere, promotions or money wise. also incredibly boring and depressing. i feel its a job not a career. i think the 3 year undergrad might be best for me, as i think i will probably find the course tough enough without squeezing the workload further into 2 years. the physics and the maths on the course worries me a little bit as they wouldnt be my strongest areas. il give the accelerated courses a look too though just to see what they are like.

iv been trying to research and get a feel for the different uni's and decide on a shortlist.

Feel free to ask me anything  I've been researching this for several months now so can probably help you with most things.

I know exactly how you feel about your degree! Ive been working in an office job since I finished my masters in October last year. It's just a job and I really can't imagine myself doing that for the rest of my life. I've always wanted to do healthcare, initially was interested in applying for medicine but my current job has introduced me to the wonderful work of radiography and I can't wait to start my application in Sept!!

Do you want to study diagnostic or therapeutic radiography? I was considering the 3 year course but I don't want to be an undergrad again....there is also the option of completing a masters with the postgraduate diploma.
