Fractured Liberal party, Asquith refused to reconcile, end of war coalition, needed to find support, reputation exploited by conservatives in coupon election 1918. Led ultimately to the fracturing of his power-base, left him the figurehead of a conservative party which had no allegience to him, discarded him as soon as he was no longer useful in 1922.
also the fact that the british economy was in ruins, as such he couldnt deliver the "land fit for heroes" that he had promised, undermined his reputation, tarnished his image
