It's essentially the same.

I was just wondering, roughly, how long does it take to specialise as a peadiatrician after uni? is it the same as specialising in other areas eg. cardiology? i've tried searching it on google etc, but had no luck so far.
Where did you do your paeds rotation? What made it so good?

So what bits of paeds do you like? What don't you like?

And more importantly, how do you know?

To explain what Renal is trying to do for you, he is trying to say that you shouldn't be thinking about specialties at the point you are at because you are probably entirely clueless of what paediatrics entails because you simply have no experienced it. First how about you take a few verbal beatings by a hypochondriac parent with a child infected by a minor cold.
^ I can see entirely what renal is doing, and I agree with what he is trying to demonstrate ;yes;

But what if it is has real personal significance to you. Such as being ill as a teen and having personal experiences making you think thats what you would like to do, like being in a childrens hospital?

Plus paeds has broad scope, I would imagine its not as narrow as saying I want to be a hepatologist. Put me right if Im wrong ...
If i had cancer, then found i absolutely hated the job of oncology, i wouldn't be an oncologist.

Surely there's nothing wrong with prospective medics doing a bit of reading about different specialties? She/he has not said that she is 100% committed to this particular area of medicine and that this is the only reason she is applying to med school, she has only expressed an interest. For all you know this is one of many specialties that she is reading about.
^Yes. What I didnt want to do was seem narrow- minded in my PS, which is why I related what I think I may want to do, to personal experience.

But anyone can say "yes, I want to read medicine". But showing that you are trying to read around the subject, and are trying to formulate some focus, to me shows more commitment.

Paediatrics is one of the areas that I'm interested in, not the only one. Actually, what got me interested in this branch was that my two youngest cousins have both been quite ill in the past, and they've had some excellent paediatricians that helped them get through it. i'm just reading around med atm, looking into what specialities a person can get into, that's all.

awwwww to be fair, i have sympathy.... i haven't done many firms and i'm looking at careers, i don't think it's wrong particularly. obviously i wouldn't choose something without giving it a try and i am very open to new things (as well as confused about what i want now) but yeah, i don't think it's wrong to look into careers as long as you're not closed minded about it.
To be honest almost every doctor I've spoken to is now in a specialty they never saw themselves in. From orthopods who wanted to be GPs to a paediatric opthalmic surgeon who swore blind she'd never work with children. None of the first-year students ever think they'll be a GP, 70% will be.

Yes, read around the different specialties, a firm knowledge of professional training will be key to a successful interview, but also keep your feet on the ground. Pass your A-levels, get into Med School and then you'll have a clearer idea about where to go.

For me, that's probably not a paeds job.

You'll probably end up in Paeds once you complete F2 ...

It's odd. The more I do, the more I'm considering, after swearing to myself for the last three years that I'd never do paeds or O&G, I can now see the attractions in both of them.
O&G maybe, but having had the tertiary referral centre paeds experience at Alder Hey and then the DGH this year and the love isn't really there. I wouldn't mind doing it for GP VTS etc but may be not forever....

However, all my mates are going for me to be a Consultant Paediatric Psychiatrist....eek
