i dont know whether this is what youre picture is, but it kind of fits. basically when a river has a varying energy its quite common for it to pick up coarser sediments like grit or gravel, and then deposit them when the energy becomes lower into things called eyots (the mound bits in your photo that seperate the "mini rivers" as it were)
