The Student Room Group

Marks and Spencers

I have an interview on Thursday for a temporary position during christmas. I have to have a one-to-one interview and a role-play type situation. Has anyone done this before? How difficult is it? Any tips? Also do you know if I'm likely to get the job? (I haven't worked in a retail background before apart from work experience, but i have been working at kumon study centres for a few years now). Thank You!
The interview is easy as long as you tell them what they want to hear....like how great M&S is etc.

I remember in my interview you had to find two customers and talk to them about why they shop at M&S. Not hard!!!

Don't tell them that unless they find new direction soon they're going to go out of business.

Did you have to ring a phone number for your interview. That's what they do near me. Is so let us know what kind of things they ask you

Well what happened is, I saw an advert in the M&S near my university, when I was visiting it, so I took down the number and rang it. But they never answer the phone, it's always busy, so I applied online (there's an application ofrm online) and they rang me. They said they don't have any positions in the branch near my uni, except for xmas temps. The thing is I will be at home at xmas, so I asked them to check for xmas temp positions at the branch near my house. So now I have an interview in person, rather than over the telephone!
I hope you get the job. I've just finished working there over the Summer. It was really dull, but the pay was OK! £4.80 with time and a half on a Sunday..

The interview is easy, just talk about M&S specialising in quality food, the fact that it is a British institution, it's lovely sandwiches etc. and you should be a shoe in.

Basically don't worry about it! When you have to go and talk to people, I'd say pick the old ladies - not cos I'm nasty but cos they're nicest and are generally willing to make conversation whereas younger people just don't wanna know! And as everyone has said, tell them how much you like M&S. With regard to how likely you are to get the job, I can honestly say I've never met anyone who has been rejected from M&S, though that may not be representative. When I applied to work there last summer, I got the job, the three other people in my interview group all got jobs, one of my friends was already working for them and now another of my friends has a job with them this summer!
Good luck!
