Re: Speed Distance Time for Dummies
I do have the correct answer but I used a calculator, from there I figured a way out without using a calculator but I need to know it will always work thats why Im asking for a proven method.
The difference between the 2 is 17. 17 is also half of 34 so when you multiply 17 by 3 you get 51 which means the answer is 1 hour and 30 mins. -
Re: Speed Distance Time for DummiesGood work figuring out your methodology. With practice you'll become more confident with moving the formula around to calculate speed, distance or time as well as noticing key numbers or the relationships between different numbers.(Original post by MadMarrio)

Have you read the first page of this thread? It's pretty comprehensive.
Also you really ought to be able to work that kind of thing out without a calculator, give it some practice

Re: Speed Distance Time for Dummies
Hi everyone,
I'm due to attempt an aptitude test for selection for pilot training after over 12 years in the infantry. My test is on 24 Apr and I'm really struggling with DST. Been reading through all the different formulas in this forum but I'm still having huge difficulties answering the different question papers on http://www.speeddistancetime.info/answers.php.
Can someone please show me how to work out the following question
At 135 mph, how long does it take to travel 36 miles?
I hope someone can help. If so I'll probably be asking about another hundred questions after this one haha.
Thanks for your time.

36/135 = 12/45
From the front page there are 1 and a third lots of 45 in an hour.
Multiply 12 by 1 and a third and get 16 minutes.
Easiest way to do it is break it into periods of an hour. Just practice it's easy becomes second nature. And that's the easy part of the testing haha. -
Re: Speed Distance Time for Dummies(Original post by eyes on)
4 hours 20 mins as a fraction of one hour is 13/3
So 52 divided by 13 and then times by 3 = 12 mph
**As soon as you see 20 mins - recognise that the fraction will be in thirds.
Likewise:
30 mins will be in halves
15 & 45 mins will be in quarters
12, 24, 36 & 48 mins will be in fifths
10 & 50 mins will be in sixths
They are the most common, but you get my point?
I can get the majority of S,D,T Qs but
What speed covers 208mile in 1hr 36mins
What speed covers 56mile in 1hr 36mins
what speed covers 32mile 6hrs 24mins
What speed covers 96mile in 5hrs 20mins
the is something recurring here...
Any help would be great!? -

Then if you do x miles in y minutes, you should be able to calculate by proportions how many miles you'd travel in 60 minutes. -
Re: Speed Distance Time for Dummies
Apologies for posting in an old thread, however...
I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of speed you're expected to calculate SDT questions during the aptitude test?
I ask, due to finally being able to answer all SDT questions (well, almost!) on this website (www.speeddistancetime.info), but I can't seem to get my average time below around 30 seconds per question due to there always being a couple questions with unusual numbers which require a bit more effort from the old brain!
Or am I just fretting over nothing? As I have heard that the numbers used in the actual aptitude test are easier than the examples given on the before mentioned website.
Thanks
Edit:
An example of what I would class as a time consuming questions is this: At 15 mph, how far do you travel in 28 hours and 20 mins?
Will they really ask questions like this? As although I can answer the question (425 miles), it takes a while!Last edited by AirPower; 13-09-2012 at 09:48. -
Re: Speed Distance Time for Dummies
Just thought I'd answer my own question above...
Yes, the SDT questions are a lot harder than the ones mentioned in this thread (or they may have just seemed difficult due to that section being near the end of the test!) - and time wise you get around 17 minutes to answer 17 questions, I think, all a bit of a blur now I've actually passed!
