Re: Architecturesame here...im going for 2 sketchbooks and 10-15 pages A1(Original post by irinarici)
All the advice that everyone's posted is reaally helpful, and i know there's been loads of it on portfolios, what to include, etc. but i was wondering if anyone knows more about the ammount of work that you should take with you - I've applied to King's, and they ask for a 'limited' portfolio: "Please bring with you a limited portfolio of selected drawings, photographs, sketches, models or other visual material which you feel best displays your general interest in design."
I was planning to take two sketchbooks from my most recent projects, along with an A1 portfolio. How many sheets should i include? -
Re: ArchitectureThat's quite a few, but it depends how much you have to say about each of them. Bear in mind that they may have to cut you short, so put your extra special super amazing work at the front in case you don't get though all of it.(Original post by mpppp)
same here...im going for 2 sketchbooks and 10-15 pages A1
Bear in mind:
If taking an art, graphic or design subject at A-level, bring coursework; if not, then bring work produced for GCSE-level Art or any other material, taught or untaught, that shows evidence of visual awareness, responsiveness and creativity. In all cases it is a good idea to include drawings of building and townscapes, and a sketchbook of places of interest or day-to-day scenes. Architectural design projects are discouraged. Besides drawings, the portfolio could include models, fabric and clothes design, pottery or sculpture, etc - or if this is too bulky, then bring photographs. -
Re: ArchitectureHmm.. visual awareness and responsiveness. not sure what works can show these.. ?(Original post by scarlet ibis)

also, my drawings are everywhere, mainly in sketch books done for Alevels
i dont have a book devoted for everyday drawings... im thinking maybe i will tear them off and group them together, but it seems a stupid idea seeing as those are parts of the development of the projects... any suggestion?
(oh god i do want to get in =.=) -
Re: Architecture
no, don't mutilate your sketchbooks. Just flip past less relevant drawings and focus on the ones you're most proud of. As for visual awareness and creativity they mean pieces that are more interesting than dull still life. Still life is good to show you can draw, but you need to demonstrate that you can see beyond that, and be more creative with what you do with a 2D plane.

Re: Architecture
ok now im slightly worried that you've told me i've got too little! i thought they didnt have much time to go through the portfolio anyway - ok so I have about 6 life drawings and then about 5 large A1 pieces--- i could take 1 sketchbook which is my current drawing one, another 2 from alevel and anothe sketchbook with more life drawings - is that ok??? thanks!

Re: ArchitectureHi, I don't think quantity matters as much as quality.(Original post by mpppp)

are those 5 A1 pieces just the final pieces? or are they the development boards? If it's the latter then I think that's enough.
those 6 life drawings they will just skim through i think.
I don't think you need another sketchbook with more life drawing, just bring the best.
yes, bring your Alevel sketchbooks, not sure what your 'sketchbook which is my current drawing one' is like, if it's just random drawings then I wouldn't bring, if it's an ongoing project then bring it.
You are right, we'll only have about 30 minuets, which include the time where they would ask you questions about your PS/ other archi questions. Last year I did not have time to show them everything.
You can bring as much as you like, just make sure you could show them the important pages in sketchbooks/ final pieces. -

Thank you ithat is slightly more resassuring, although the A1 pieces are just lone large paintings. There's no way I can do more - cos i did a year in engineering and havent done anything to do with art for a while so it's a bit difficult to get ongoing pieces (i hope you can get what i mean) i have given my self a topic but i'm not sure if thats enough - which include a sculpture too!! thanks again! -
Re: Architecture
yes, but its quite different to the standard part 2 course, its an MPhil focusing on environmental design, with heavy emphasis on research, and its not eligible for funding in the same way, so you can't get a student loan to fund it the way you can get one for normal part 2 diplomas.
good luck to everyone who has interviews! -
Re: ArchitectureHia, i have and my interview is there on monday... so scared!(Original post by student111)
has anyone else applied to kings college cambridge for architecture? if so have you heard about an interview yet?
I know you posted this a few weeks ago, so have you heard back yet? If so, when are you going down there? Good luck

Architecture portfolios from Cambridge students?
Hi,
I just got rejected from Cambridge for Architecture , ive also got rejected from a couple of my others and it seem like this is down to my portfolio.
Im thinking of reapplying to Cambridge next year but dont want to make the same mistake. Can anyone who got in this year or in previous years help me with what was included in your portfolio. Photos would really help as I feel like ive completely missed the point with mine
Thanks -
Re: Architecture portfolios from Cambridge students?
Hi Im in the same year as you so maybe Im not the best to give advice but when I was looking around I was told that its good to have some traditional work and life drawing in there so they know you can sketch but also want some 3D stuff for spatial awareness and finally you have to show some creativity-maybe final pieces if you are doing art a level?
which college did you apply to? -
Re: Architecture portfolios from Cambridge students?
Drawings in a 3D perspective helps. Architectural designers like Renzo Piano, Models did you do Design technology for GCSE or A levels, Images of them, or make your own models and what influenced them. Computer 3D designs would help showing how you use space.
also very very scared....are both of yours with architecture people? cos i appear to have two architecture interviews and no general interview....
