I am not a big fan of this book. Very simplistic, a lack of imagination and literary flair, and for it to be called Magical Realism, bracketed it with masters such as Garcia Marquez, and that is completely ridiculous.(Original post by muffin)
well this is my first Paulo Coelho and i just picked it up quite randomly from the library at school. I havent finished it yet so I cant really say much but the book is ok so far although a little too sentimental and feminine for my liking at times. I guess I'll just have to wait for the ending.
It's a book which has had too much praise, it was like an 'in' book to read, like the Da Vinci Code now... but 'horses for courses'. -
I really didnt like the Dave Pelzer series. I just didnt seem to connect with the story at all. I have read books on similiar cases that have been conveyed better.(Original post by Va Va Voom)
The J.K Rowling series, excluding no.5, Phillip Pullman, and Virginia Andrews. The first 3 books by Dave Pelzer are definitely my most memorable read
For a girlie read I love Marian Keyes, particularly the walsh girls series. Harry Pooter is great obviously and I've read all the Patricia Cornwell's though the last 2 have been pretty poor.
The beach was great (shame about the movie) and i've bought about a boy so will start on that soon. -
the stuff everyone knows;
harry potter - J K Rowling
His Dark materials - Phillip Pullman
Deception Point,da Vinci code,angels and demons and digital fortress - dan brown
and also;
Inkheart - Cornelia Funke
The Bartimaeus trilogy - Jonathan stroud(BRLLIANT!!!)
books by Terry Pratchett,Margeret haddix,Eoin Colfer are generally good.
OK,i'll shut up now... -

i was hugely disappointed by the lack of threads about books, so I decided to start things off with something pretty basic...
What authors or books did you particularly enjoy reading?
For the fourth time:
James Barclay (very good and original)
James Clemens (these grew on me - some interesting ideas)
Ian Irvine (WHO IS THE NUMINATOR!?)
Trudi Canavan (not bad books, all good but not on par with the very best like Hobb)
Robin Hobb (perhaps the best books EVER)
Robert Jordan (surprisingly good)
Terry Pratchett (do Ineed to tell you)
Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman (tend to work on same books)
Garth Nix (obviously (this was originally in a Garth Nix forum (or foram as Lirael would have it)))
J.K.Rowling (whatever anyone says)
And of course Robin Hobb is the best. -
i absolutely love this book! its got to be one of the best books of 04/05! it made me cry too, but i also laughed. it is addictive, i read it so quickly. in fact i may hve to read it agin now!(Original post by calypsostar)
i have just started reading the lovely bones by alice sebold. it has to be the best book i have read in a long time. it is the only book that made me cry! i only bought it today and am already halfway through it! it can be rather disturbing tho, extremely graphic begining i thought. if you read it you will see what i mean. -

Absolutely. I love 'The Player of Games' (in his sci-fi persona) and 'The Business' was superb.(Original post by greenmuzz)
Iain Banks is trully awesome - without doubt in my mind the best I have ever read. Better than the so called classics.

He's positively brilliant.
