If you write a good enough research paper you might get a Nobel prize and a Professorship from a respected Uni. (Prove the Riemann hypothesis maybe?)

The Extended Project Qualification - a standalone qualification that will be worth an AS. Graded like GCE AS, but it is just a project and a presentation.
I'm doing Edexcel Perspectives on Science now, which was an linear AS a few years ago (code 8850), and became a model for the EPQ. At my college, there are all kinds of EPQ being piloted - a fashion one, one for media, I think one for history; this science one has been running for quite some time now. I only joined in January, and we have one two-hour lesson after college.
