UNSC Reform Resolution

The Republic of Slovenia will, within the next few days, begin work on a resolution to bring about much needed reforms with the United Nations Security Council.

We seek partners in our objectives of re-balancing power within the UNSC to fit modern requirements, perhaps with the addition of new Permanent Members with/without veto powers and a revamp of Non-Permanent Membership arrangements.

More ambitiously, we would, if we see the requisite amount of support, seek the removal of the veto altogether- due to its acrimonious role in preventing necessary and vital intervention in times of crisis due to the inability of the P5 to resolve petty political differences.

Replies to this preliminary discussion would be greatly appreciated. The Republic of Slovenia would like delegates to note that this topic and the resolution that may come out of it is not part of the Republic of Slovenia's responsibilities as the current President of the EU.

Other member states willing to work with Slovenia on the issue of UNSC reform can contact me via PM.

The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan agrees whole-heartedly with this ambition - in a time of security crisis, no time should be wasted exchanging playground-grade insults, retorts and counter-retorts.

Somalia agree's with the need of a re-vamp in the UNSC. We believe that there should be an equal number of permanent and non permanent members, all with veto power. We do not believe that the Veto power should be abolished, however, we need some sort of safety guad that can over rule a country if it is believed to be acting for some sort of selfish gain in their own country.
The question, of course, is how to get this passed...
Because inevitably the SC will have to decide on this too and they'll probably veto it.
Do you think we can get the majority of non-P5 states on board to:

1. Abolish or Reform the Veto
2. Expand and Diversify Membership

It will be hard.

PM your mentor and see whether or not a resolution would do the trick.

The Secretary General recommends that delegates browse through old pages of the MUN, the Resolutions subforum, and use the forum search tool, to review past discussions and threads on this issue.

[ooc] As much as I like this personally...keeping in character...[/ooc]

The USA does not see itself or other Security Council members giving up their vetos.
India would welcome the amendment of the UNSC, in which it should be granted permanent tenure on the council.

Voting would have to take place in order to elect any permanent members of the security council and I hope this takes precedent in any resolution stemming from this reform.

We would support this reform but feel that it will be hard to get it passed.
