Indeed, my YINI placement is with a company that builds parts for Particle Accelerators. Just thought you might be interested since you seem keen on CERN.

Economics related: as mentioned above the best option would be to get on one of the Big4 gap year programmes (PwC, KPMG, Deloitte, Ernst and Young)- a decent job with a good pay and lots of responsibility and exposure, possible sponsorship through university and a very good chance it'll guarantee you a grad job there if all goes well and will help you get interviews at lots of other firms nevertheless. Read into them, apply to all four early and you should get into one.

Alternatively: Accenture, Bank of England, Rothschild (the only bank I know of that does a gap programme), YINI (as mentioned above although this will be more IT/Engineering/possibly Physics related).

Work but most definitely also travel. All the best.
