The Student Room Group

Let's get the wiki sorted!

Ok guys, it's been brought to my attention recently that the forum is getting cluttered, there are lots of old stickies etc with information which is no longer necessarily up to date. I've unstuck some of them as the information is now available on the wiki (e.g. Medical school information and entry requirements).

Most of you have probably noticed that there's a lot of the same questions come up again and again. There is pretty good coverage of some subjects on the wiki but not of others. To that end, I'd like people to pick out any particularly good posts/threads they've found on here and we can move some of that information over, then just have a thread with wiki links at the top of the page which should answer most questions. Once that's up and running, I'll start merging lots of applicant question threads together so that they don't take over the forum and we grumpy old medical students can be happier.

So that's about it really - if you have any useful bits which you think aren't already covered in the wiki (main Medicine page is here) then put the linkies up in here and we'll get on with making this place tidier and more informative!

- What should you gain from your work experience?
- From what I can see there doesn't seem to be much about A Level choices. It might be good to discuss taking Maths and Further Maths or PE, as well as how necessary it is to have more than 2 sciences, etc etc.
- A minor point really, but something about how to prepare for the UKCAT/what your score means/cut-offs for universities might be useful  I can see the forum being inundated with threads about it come summer!
Just gonna post a link here for you that I'm not sure if you're all aware of yet, but here you can see a list of all the medicine/medicine related articles currently on the wiki

Thought it might be useful to see what there is beyond the main couple of articles and to know where the stuff came from

The list from that page is:

*A Brief Guide to Intercalated Degrees
*Biomedical Sciences Degree
*Medicine
*Medicine Course Structure
*Medicine at University
*Resources for Medical Students
*Studying Medicine in the USA
*What to do if you don't get into medical school
*Where to Study Medicine

Randdom wrote the 'Intercalated degree' and the 'what if you don't get in?' articles from scratch.

The USA article cam from a thread in the US Study forum.

I think the biomedical science page is another new one started from scratch while the rest have been based on threads in this forum.

To see the articles follow the link at the top of this post and follow the links from there

I have been looking at what information there was on the forum that could be made into an article and think it might be worth making an Medical school interviews article which will compile the information with a secton for all the medical schools that there is information for. I will start working on this in the afternoon and post a link when I am done

Yes, this is a good idea. We have to be careful about how much detail is posted though - for Oxbridge in particular they really don't like specific questions to get out. Interview guidelines and ideas for types of questions are a good plan though.
a while back i meant to make a page about each medical school and have information there about the key features of each place and like what you actually do rather than just the prospectus gibberish. i might have a go next week sometime if that sounds reasonable.

Good idea

Rachel wrote a great page for BSMS a while ago and we have blank pages for PMS and HYMS, so you could use those.

They kind of follow the layout of the uni gudies - but appart from the info box you could change the pages however you want

If you make enough it might be good to make a 'medical schools' category to add them all to and we can also link to them from the main unis article too

Ok this is what i came up with. I looked for information for the first few pages. I will continue to add to it as I find information and if other people could add interview information that they have that would be great

I haven't put anything which tells people much about the interview except for peninsula and that information is everywhere.

I've changed and added some information to the King's medical interview wiki.
I don't think it's very well worded, though, so feel free to edit it.

Thats great. It is hard to write about an interview procedure that you have never been though so yours is much better

I just added some stuff about A Level choices, the UKCAT and interviews at Nottingham, Sheffield and SGUL
I have a little request....if anyone can help out

You might know I'm going some development of the postgrad section of the wiki. Well I thought it might be nice to have a specialist article on entry to postgraduate medicine.

We have little bits about it on other articles, but as far as I'm aware no detailed article on it.

Does anyone know anything much about entry on to a medicine course as a postgrad?

It could cover things like where does it, what the entry requirements are, what you ought to do your first degree in or what you ought to do whilst at uni to maximise your chances. When should you apply? What is the application process like? How does this course differ from traditional undergrad medicine courses? Things like that.

Anyone feel they could help out with this?

Just added a long list of BMAT practice essay titles to the BMAT wiki. I pinched them from a friend at a private school

it sounds like an amazing idea. depends how much you feel you can write atm. i think there certainly needs to be something about it on here: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/wiki/What_to_do_if_you_don%27t_get_into_medical_school as actually there isn't even a comment about it. if you think you can write enough, make a new page and we'll link to it from there or if not just add a title and put the stuff there. actually there's probably enough stuff to fill a whole page though even if you don't feel like filling it personally. Can you make the page or do you want me to do it for you?

I'll do it as soon as I have some time - I'm currently beleagured by form filling etc..

Oh and the personal statements are a complete disaster. Take this one for example:

27 Medicine Wiki PS No

The choices for the A-level courses I have taken this year rely solely on my interests. I love science, so biology and chemistry keep me interested yet challenged which I like about the subjects. I have no regrets in taking Food technology, as it is one of my favourite subjects that I happen to be fairly good at, I also like the fact how it links to all my other subjects. I chose geography to add some versatility to my choices with a subject I thoroughly enjoy. I like the balance of my subjects, as they are all different and yet complement each other in different ways. I have recently taken part in curriculum enrichment short courses in sports like self-defence and rugby because it is a change from anything I have done before

Self-defence has given me a new-found interest as I am now taking up Tai Qwon Do at my local fitness club. I have also done programmes in"Group Dynamics" and "Learning to Drive" which have given me useful skill for the future. I am currently working towards my Bronze Medallion Lifesaving award which, although being physically demanding is quite fun

In school I have taken part in a short theatre technical lighting course which was useful and has given me the skills to be able to work all the lighting and special effects for drama productions. To complement my new skills in the theatre, I decided to expand on this by joining up for the theatre make-up course which was not only a lot of fun, but surprisingly informative as well. These skills mean I can now work behind the scenes for upcoming drama events. When I have a free Wednesday lunchtime, I benefit from being able to freely go along to the Literary and Debating society and put across my point of view as I love a good debate! Every week on a Tuesday, I give up an hour of my free time to visit Bolton School Nursery. I find this quite rewarding as the younger children have increased my confidence and given me communication skills on a new level, I enjoy spending time with them and have built up a few sweet relationships with them. I also gave up some of my extra spare time to help with their nativity play and its preparations, which was fairly difficult to organise

During the weeks running up to Christmas 2003, I had a lot of fun attending Christmas cake club, this allowed my creative side to become unleashed, and created a very good cake as my end product. Recently, the year group took part in a business dynamics competition. This allowed me to get involved in a business type project that was something interesting and different. As I didn't really enjoy business related subjects and projects that much, but this allowed me to look into business into a greater depth, and I soon realised there was many opportunities that can be personal and enjoyable for me as an individual

Out of school I enjoy keeping fit by going to the gym usually twice a week to run and swim. I also play tennis leisurely there in my spare time. Also in the summer is when I am most active. I spend most my summer down in Anglesey where I am a member of the Trearddur Bay Sailing Club where at I enjoy sailing mirrors and toppers. I have also received a few awards from races I have competed in (some first place). The summer is also a time where I take advantage of the weather so I can do my favourite sport; water-skiing. My family and I have a powerboat, which enables me to do this, having this boat has increased my awareness of the dangers in the water, and as I have had experience in driving and maintaining the boat. I know that if I ever want the responsibility of driving it alone I have to take an intense power-boating course, which I am in the process of booking. When I am not in Anglesey during the summer, I am on a North Wales outdoor pursuits camp for up to 20 days in the Nant Gwynant valley in Snowdonia, this camp provides the opportunity for camp craft, canoeing, abseiling, orienteering, sailing, windsurfing, rock-climbing, hill-walking and off-road cycling. This camp is with the Columbus Fellowship, of which I am a junior leader. I help with the running of the camp, taking on duty groups and keeping an eye on younger members and play a large role in leadership. I specialise in two areas of the camp; camp administration, and mountain activities, I also play a large role in the catering of the camp which is a very unusual and challenging job, working to a very tight budget and having to cook for 100+ people in a tent! I have a part time job at La Senza, where I work as a lingerie consultant, which I work a day and a night in a week, I enjoy the job although it is unexpectedly hard work. My hobbies include reading, listening to music and cookery

I would like to go to university to study Medicine once I have completed my A level course, as I have a passion for helping others as well as a strong interest in science. I have always wanted to go into a career science related. But it wasn't until recently when I had been spending more time in hospitals with doctors because of my grandfathers heart attack, that I realised how much I appreciate what they do, and that it was the career path for me. I am looking into doing some community work medicine related, maybe with the Macmillan Nurses. And I have already got some work experience lined up for the near future with a consultant. I would like to complete a gap year in the Armed Forces (Regular Commissions Board), when I finish my A levels. To help me give me more of an insight into what is involved in this, the Army has arranged a week's work experience for me. I shall travel up to Scotland, to the Garelochhead Training camp to take part in an intense training and assessment week, while learning some very valuable skills.

This is a total disaster. I mean things like working at Senza...AND? What does that do, make you better at giving physicals?
fabulous. errrrm there's talk going on with the personal statement reviewers on here on the best way to review statements on the wiki. obviously people need to know that's not what they're aiming for

I notice that the HYMS Wiki page has absolutely no information on it.

I'm not sure how this whole wiki thing works - can I just start filling stuff in? Do I need to reference everything?

I feel bad that my medical school isn't fully represented on TSR :p:.
Yeah, just go a head and fill it all in - opinions as well as facts are good - what is good and bad about the place. What do the students think etc.

Referencing isn't required (though why not if you want to?).

Post here again if it's filled up and we can see about adding HYMS in to the main list of universities
