I wouldn't say being in a self-catered hall is a 'chore'. You will enjoy having the luxury of being able to eat what you want, when you want rather than having to eat at specific times (and some very bad things have been said about the food in the catered halls in Uni Park). Plus, sooner or later you'll have to learn to cook for yourself when you move into a house in your second and third years anyway.
I'm at Broadgate Park literally just outside the West Entrance of Uni Park and I wouldn't say it's unsociable at all. I've made plenty of friends and there's things going on all the time. I've got a single ensuite room and in a flat with 6 other people. But if you were in a studio room, that would be harder to socialise as there's no communal area like a kitchen.
Another good thing about the self-catered halls is that you can keep all your stuff in your room over Christmas and Easter whereas in the catered halls in Uni Park you have to empty out your room every time the term ends which would be an absolute pain...
