How highly Regarded is the University of Southampton?
This is a bit like the other thread going about Exeter Uni, except it's about Southampton.
I've always known it's a university which is quite highly regarded with some of the strongest departments in the country but it seems like a quiet university? I don't mean physically, just that it's not a university that's always talked about yet it's not one which nobody knows about. I'm probably making no sense, but what other unis in this country is it on par with - would you say?
Just curious what people on here think, really. -
Re: How highly Regarded is the University of Southampton? You do know that League Tables can be... wrong, right?(Original post by sophisticated)
Geeeees.....look at the league tables!!!!!!!
What Universities are just above it, below it etc
That will tell you what other Unis its on par with.
Simple really

Re: How highly Regarded is the University of Southampton?Agree with above poster, League tables are thoroughly researched and probably know more than biased people on TSR who are going to promote their own University and nothing else.(Original post by MGT_90)

Re: How highly Regarded is the University of Southampton?
I was on a boat last summer moored next to a boat full of lecturers and researchers from a good university (better not mention which)and I overheard them discussing the merits of the various universities they were involved with. They said that they thought that Southampton was an excellent university and was very much on the way up (and interestingly that they thought Bristol was on the way down).

Re: How highly Regarded is the University of Southampton?I can see why you're asking this question, because I'm in a similar position. It's because we're both in the northern sector of the country - Southampton as a university just never gets spoken about as a 'good university' - rather it doesn't get spoken about at all. The only comments I ever get when I mention it is: "Wow, that's really far away!" Therefore there's no way of knowing if it's a highly regarded uni or not.(Original post by hakunamatata)

I'm really considering going to Southampton, I thought it was a lovely university - but as shallow as it sounds, I'd like it to be well reputed, too!

Re: How highly Regarded is the University of Southampton?
It depends on your course. Overall it ranked 14 in The Times tables, but if you take a look through the uni's many strong departments, they are consistently in the top 10, and even top 5 for some subjects. It is very highly regarded and from what I've heard, it's very very lively since it has a lot of cool stuff on campus like a pub, bar, cafe and even its own nightclub.

Exeter has a pub, a bar, a nightclub, more bars in catered halls, and dozens of cafes across the campus. -

Well lets just say they know more than students on TSR who are going to blindly promote their own University, despite what research for the League Tables has shown.
(speaking as someone who is employed to analyse league tables
)
At least anecdotal evidence doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is - the league tables pretend to provide a definitive ranking. -
Re: How highly Regarded is the University of Southampton?
I Know what you mean hakuna, I hadnt really heard alot about southampton beforeI came here, But when I started researching it I learned that is an excellent university, with a great reputation, and is extremely well known for its enginering, computer science and medicine departments to name a few. (Depending where you read we have been put no. 1 for the first two!) Generally the univesity consistently ranks in the top 20 unis in the country, and at the Mo I beleive its 13-17 between the two guides, and is one of he russel group universitys again all of these share great research reputations.
The facilities are great as said above, The campus itself has A nightclub, a bar, a pub, susu cafe, west refractory eating plce/ gigs held there, 2 Lattes cafe/eating places, a shop, a hairdressers, a travel centre, a sports centre with facilities for most sports (Squash badminton courts, gym etc), a student cinema, 3 banks, a endsleigh insurers, waterstones, post office, dance studios, a theatre which shows many student plays as well as acts from across country, a concert hall... Aparently if you look hard enough in the su people have even found a laundrette somewhere! Heh.
The University has an amazing Uni Bus service called Uni-Link which can take you from halls to campus, to portswood, to the city centre, asda, hospital, train station.. mostly double deckers running frequently all day (3 an hour odd) and free for first years!
The accomdation campus also have there own restaurants/bars/laundrettes/gyms/shops etc depending which one your at.
Heh so yes in all. Great!
Soph are you just here to answer every remark with 'Exeter has that too?' While im sure its also a great univeristy its a bit out of place when were in the southampton uni forum discussing this uni... -
Re: How highly Regarded is the University of Southampton?Nope...I mentioned Exeter ONCE as an example to make a point that Southampton isnt special just because it has a couple of cafes and a nightclub.(Original post by Hanzing)

Re: How highly Regarded is the University of Southampton?Oh right....so that would be why potential employers look at posts on TSR forum instead of looking at the League tables when making job offers to graduates...yessss I see it now!(Original post by PQ)

Re: How highly Regarded is the University of Southampton?in the main SU entrance (ie not the west building), stairs on the right (the bridge side) all the way down and follow the signs to the sports hall. The laundrette is on the right ;yes;(Original post by Hanzing)
