lol may be not the details of each molecule... although I do recall learning lots about arginine binding sites on various enzymes..

i think it's important we do it just because it's interesting, even if it isn't medically relevant per se... if a doctor had no interest in current research, would you not be worried? e.g. he doesn't even know the latest treatment for hepatocellular carcinoma or latest clinical trials??
Yep agreed, although I can't say I'd be concerned if a doctor not specialising with anything to do with the liver or cancer didn't know of the latest treatment. Many doctors take a purley functionalist and practical view on current medical research whilst others are more enagaged by it, it isn't a source of concern. But I can see why the interviewer asked the question, it was Oxford afterall and they'd prefer their medics to really enjoy the science even the clinically pointless bits.

this thread is about questions we didnt see coming so the answer to your question is No. having said that, you could prepare for the more expected questions like the well known "why medicine?".

at our school we didn't really get much help at all, but my friends gave me a mock interview, which helped me to relax when talking to people about myself.

    I got:

    - What are the disavantages of using two limbs to walk :O
    - what do you know about vericose veins?
    - what is imflammation? (he wanted to know in a lot of detail)

    Why do u support everton?
btw mhairi_10 u have an offer of BCC from glasgow:eek:
Haha work-til-failure, yes i do :] Everyone in my school seems to have gotten BCC at advanced higher or BB in two advanced highers and B in crash higher biology, or BB in two advanced highers and a C in another higher. I can't tell if you thought that was a good or bad thing, but we're all still kind of pinching ourselves i think... although i think i'm going to decline glasgow, which is really weird and making me feel really guilty :]

p.s sorry for spamming up the thread with not very relevant replies!

yeah i gave caramelisation as an answer but what he wanted me to say was that i should dissolve them in water and then see which one would carry an electrical current
lol I thought of this instantly but then thought.. NA!

Make two puddles, dissolve each one in either puddle. Remove the plugs from 2 kettles, and lay them in the puddles. Now, lower both arms into the puddle. The greatest shock will identify the salt.

Someone was asked this year (he told me as he got out in waiting room) "Why imperial?" He proceeded to explain why UCL was SO great. They let him finish, before noting that UCL is in another part of London.

How many genes in the human genome?

How many genes in a maize plant? More? Why's that?

How does Alzheimer's work.... This was rather crap. Personal statement" recently i've become intrested in neurodegenrative disease, in particular, alzheimer's" Then they replace my second interviewer with a consultant on neurodegen from Addenbroke's, whose main intrest is Alzheimer's. :C

I've been through 3 interviews, and never got a weird question. It's basically something standard, i.e; why medicine, why this particular medical school, why the UK(i'm an international applicant), what are the qualities of a doctor and how to cope with stress.
you will have to pay a hell lot of money..isnt it? because i wanted to do medicine as well but it kind of costs more than 100,000£ for 5 years including everything!
so then i decided to do pharmacy.
