Re: Which Accommodation Have You Applied For?
They guarantee you accomodation as long as you've got them as a firm offer and you apply before August.
I've just applied myself, going self-catered. I was originally going to apply for Pollock but changed my mind...
1) Darroch Court
2) Hermit's Croft
3) Sciennes 1
But then again apparently I might not get any of those - they'll place you where they thinks best etc.

Re: Which Accommodation Have You Applied For?
I haven't actually had any formal tours around the uni, so pretty much just took a stab in the dark when picking the first year flats. They're all fairly local to where I need to be, and all cost the same, so it shouldn't really matter..
1. Hermit's Croft
2. Robertson's Close
3. Warrender Park Crescent -
Re: Which Accommodation Have You Applied For?
I put:
1) New Arthur Place
2) nicolson st
3) Robertsons close
i think. not sure, 2) and 3) may be the other way around. hmmm.
I visited them all pretty much though, and theyre all basically the same. its down to location, but then theyre all pretty great for getting to george sq.
i find it really confusing that george sq. and george street, (rather different places) have such similar names. I always saying the wrong one and getting "looks" as if i was at university on George Sreet!! -
Re: Which Accommodation Have You Applied For?This is utter bull****. Accommodation Services provide a guarantee that they will find accommodation for all first years, except those within a specified distance of Edinburgh, provided an application is made by a date in the middle of August- I'm not entirely sure when, but it's after A level results are posted, thereby giving everybody- whether they had Edinburgh as a first or second choice- an opportunity to apply. As to getting first choice, Edinburgh University does not operate on a 'first-come-first-served' system, instead allocating accommodation after Higher and A-level results, when most applications are in. Therefore everybody has a roughly equal chance of getting their first choice, though be warned that the chances of anybody getting their first choice are not particularly high in themselves.(Original post by artorscience?)
You do it here. But I should warn you that if Edinburgh is only your insurance you're highly unlikely to get your first choice, and run the risk of getting no accommodation offers at all. -
Re: Which Accommodation Have You Applied For?This creates a system of first come first served as the Higher results are out weeks before the A-level results. And I know plenty of students who were allocated accommodation with barely 2 weeks to go before freshers week who had applied whilst on gap years so their applications had got lost. The same with those given U offers based on their highers. The official line is that those with UF offers are allocated accommodation on receiving the applications, and that groups of accommodation are made available periodically to ensure that whenever you apply there should be an equal chance of getting accommodation as desired.(Original post by michaelnicholson88)

However. There is the warning that, whilst accommodation is guaranteed, it will not necessarily be until term starts (although if the accommodation is not ready by the start of term then alternative accommodation is provided - I was told that this would be hostel-style). And last year, I know noone who received the accommodation that they put as their first choice and few recieved one from their selected list...(be they UF or CI applications) -

Re: Which Accommodation Have You Applied For?Subject to limited exceptions, you must take three subjects in first year. These can usually be taken from anywhere within your school, and possibly beyond, provided that the subject is not oversubscribed.(Original post by Quinapalus)
Am already reading two subjects so sincerely hope that I won't have to take up another...
Do they expect you to take up subjects directly related to your course, or can it be anything within your department?
