in store and news paper is better than online.

Go direct to the manager and ask them personally if they have any vacancies. Have a CV ready in case they ask for one.

Not always true, I tried going in shops and stuff and then later I applied for one online (Sainsburys) and they called me a matter of days after for an interview then I got the job. So online worked a treat for me lol. All depends really.
Shops usually have signs in the window if they have vacancies. Often it is only management positions that can be applied for online, but it will depend on the place.
check your local newspaper(s) on job night, search the job centre online or go in, print off your CV and take it here there and everywhere etc.- thats what usually works for me

Before going through newspaper job sections or asking speculatively, have you asked around family friends/parent's friends? there's nothing to lose and it can pay off.

I'm not saying you should disregard newspapers/applying but asking around is definitely worth it.
