How to approach a summer job

Basically for the last 2 years I have tried to look for summerjobs, but with no success. I started looking in May and June and I was told by people it was too late. Now that we are in March I thought I should search now, but the problem is how do I approach it. Do I go around and ask if they have vacancies in a couple of months?

What is the most effective way of doing this?
