Best University for Special effects, Video editing, animation, CGI etc.

Hey guys, Title sort of speaks for itself but was wondering if anyone knew which Universitys were great for students interested in doing degrees in Special effects, Video editing, animation, CGI, character moddeling or even video game creation?

You can do a degree in special effects.. oh dear

I thought if you wanted to do this kind of work, you'd be the coffee person at a directing studio and work your way up

Im sure that sounds about as appealing to you as it does to me :p:

Nope, surley it is better and fun to learn how to do all those amazing things and then go into employment on similar softwares and projects then to observe somone else doing it, though yes i have heard people who have served as runners in the industry and worked their way up, though i would prefer to actually know what im doing properly and have qualifications in it first.
Fool of a took

a gaming developer site or an article somewhere. it was a few years ago when i wanted to go into games development. im still temped now but not on the animation side on the actual concept of the game i.e storyline and gameplay dynamics. i havnt compared many courses though mate so swansea may not be the best. best bet is looking at art schools rather than unis.
I'm currently working in a studio making music DVDs. One of our guys here Adam went to a college in South Bank London. Apparently Special Effects is really their specialty. It sounds like he got a lot of time to play around with different techniques from Prosthetics to Animatronics and sounds to have been an awesome course. He's honestly the most amazing designer i've worked with and he's 22 moving into a role as Creative Director. So in short South Bank!

Have you heard of Skillset? They review the quality of courses in some of the areas you mentioned, accrediting the ones that are most relevant to their respective industries. You might want to look at:

[*]I have a lot more to add, but I'm short on time at the moment (if you can wait 5 weeks, send me a PM and I'll be able to help you in far greater depth). Sorry!

[*]I don't want to pick on you, but this is a generic response to anyone wanting to study a specialist degree. Aside from the fact that he'll probably be bored studying a more general subject (an ill-advised way to spend 3 or more years of your life), a respected degree in his discipline should offer a good chance of employment within its respective industry, and be flexible enough in the skills that it teaches to allow him to move into a different - but related - sector, should he so desire.

What does this have to do with Computer Science or IT? Being done on computers doesn't count.

Kent has a special course for that, unsure what it's called but its computer science integrated with media I believe.

trying to work that out also, I have heard SCAD, Bournemouth, Aberystwyth university and even UCL but I would like to hear from someone who has actually done a CGI or 3D animation course.
Hi!

Bournemouth University is amazing for all things animation, video and media. I'm an MA student at BU studying Video Editing, and I did my BA here in Multimedia Journalism.
The facilities are incredible and BU has a global reputation as being one of the best for animation and visual effects. BU graduates have won academy awards for their work on Gravity and Avatar, as well as working on lots of other blockbuster films.
I'd really recommend booking in on one of the open days here so you can come see the facilities and campus for yourself.
Also a nice bonus is the town, the night life and the beach!
I'd be happy to answer any questions if you have them

I recently got an offer and accepted my place at Arts University Bournemouth. This is the first year their running the Visual Effects and Post Production course and I was very pleased with what I saw during my interview/open day. Especially compared to Leeds Met / Birmingham City and Westminster. Bournemouth's advantage is having a branch of Framestore right next door and the aftercare / reputation is above most others from what i could gather.

Escape studios in Sheppard's Bush is also worth checking out.
