Do you think its worth doing a self catered accommodation as my first two options will be Ewing and Lee, aren't these locations less sought after and therefore easier to get into, when compared to other Pollock Halls locations?

It doesn't matter what you put as your choices really. If you are in the group of unlucky people who do not get your first choice accommodation where you are put is entirely random. If you want to believe that by putting 3 choices you really want down, you are more likely to get into them then do it. If you are not given a place in Pollock you are not going to be given nice, popular self-catered accommodation. Put down what you want, nothing really makes much of a difference.

Bottom line is that all accommodation is over-subscribed and the accommodation services lies on its website to boost morale and encourage you to pick self-catered accommodation to draw away from the absolutely most popular places. You will get offered accommodation, your choices then will be either to accept or find your own way.
But nihilism aside, the mechanism is there for a reason. Botom line is that Accommodation Services make every attempt to place people in their choices and, if they cannot do that, only then will they resort to allocating you elsewhere.
