James Baillie Park or Henry Price?

Re: James Baillie Park or Henry Price?Hey, I had the exact same problem between these two so I know how you feel!(Original post by sequinpeach)
Having been to the accommodation open day today, I've managed to narrow down my choices to these two, but I really can't decide which one to go for. Anyone able to help me make up my mind?
Which one has the better social atmosphere?
I chose Henry Price for a few reasons: closer to lectures, so can get up later and get back quicker if it's raining
, it's mid way between Headingley and the city centre, it has a great atmosphere and the rooms and kitchens were big and spacious, everything you could ask for. Bathrooms probably better at JB. I think they're both as sociable as each other, and James Bailie Park is in a nicer (posher) area. However, I wouldn't want to walk through Hyde Park at late night.
Hope this helps a little! -
Re: James Baillie Park or Henry Price?
My reply to everyone who asks which halls are more sociable is, it isn't the halls that determine sociabiltiy it's the people you will live with.

There's nothing wrong with Henry Price in terms of the amount of people, the communal kitchen etc. But you could get lumbered with people who only leave their room to go to lectures and vice versa.
Base you decisions on the facilities that each hall has (My guide is pretty in depth for Henry Price
- Thought I'd plug it
) Concentrate on the things that are certain, bedroom space, where it's located etc etc You'll have to hope for some luck when it comes to getting some nice talkative people

Re: James Baillie Park or Henry Price?
I think it has that atmosphere too a small degree , there were more rahs looking around it on the open day. but then again everywhere is going to have a mix of people so i would just go with which one you prefer. I think the only accom. to have a distinct rep. for rahs is dev.

Re: James Baillie Park or Henry Price?Yeah I heard that as well but the students living there didn't seem very 'rah'-ish. I think the only place to avoid if you don't want to mix with any is Devonshire, it doesn't seem to be much of an issue at JBP.(Original post by katiemcg)
Arrgh i'm having the exact same problem.
My only issue with James Baillie is that some people have been saying that it's full of the 'posh' people who didn't get into Devonshire? Anyone know if this is true?
I think I'm leaning towards JBP a bit more, most of the rooms having an en-suite is a big plus. The shared bathroom system at Henry Price seemed a bit.....risky. I wouldn't want people walking in on me in the shower :\
TheWizard - Yeah I guess uni is ultimately only as sociable as you make it, and I'll just have to hope I get a nice bunch of lively people to live with
Nice work on the Henry Price guide by the way
I really like the idea of being on campus so I can just roll out of bed to lectures and have quick access to the gym/libraries/union etc. But I just getter a better feeling from JBP so I think I'll probably opt for there.
Thanks for the help everyone

Re: James Baillie Park or Henry Price?Fraid not. However, at JBP you're only a stones throw from millions of bars in Headingley and you're not far from the Sports Centre on campus and only a short bus ride from the Weetwood playing fields (both of which are much better than the facilities that there are at Dev.)(Original post by tooth*ache)
i was just wondering, if i chose JBP can i use devonshire facilities, like the bar, and sports facilities?
anyone know?
If you want a bar and a gym on site, by the way, Oxley's the place. -
Re: James Baillie Park or Henry Price?
full of 'top brass'.. i'd love you to tell me where precisely they are as i haven't seen them! i live here and trust me everyone is friendly, and there's a real mix of people..
everyone assumes that because it's ensuite, slightly more expensive it will be full of rahs but it most definitely isn't at all! yeah there were a lot of rahs looking round on open day, there were when i looked round last year but as everyone says you shouldn't judge people on their appearance anyway. i know plenty of friendly rahs

Harrogate is a large, wealthy spa town in the Harrogate district of North Yorkshire in the Yorkshire and the Humber region of England.Which I'm guessing is why your definiton of 'top brass' and mine may differ, and may be why these 'rahs' may be friendly to you. I can't accurately judge someone I don't know and is merely a collection of pixels to me but I can still have an attempt.Harrogate is another wealthy enclave - a fifth of the region's most expensive streets are here;
That ensuite meaning you're more rich is *******s, I don't want to stay with people who aren't clean neither would my parents allow me to so I agree with you, ensuite doesn't automatically mean these 'rah' people.
I agree you shouldn't judge people on their appearance but that's the way it is, and that's probably why when I went round JBP I wasn't feeling the friendly vibe at all from the people who were living there. I've been in similar situations before, I'm not looking to be in one at uni and that's why I don't wanna stay in JBP. Each to their own I guess.
Anyway what's so wrong with being a 'rah'... In London it means "wow", it's used to show shock or amazement at something. -
Re: James Baillie Park or Henry Price?
It's true you can't accurately judge but yes.. I happen to be from Harrogate, yes, and in comparison to Leeds it is posh, being local to Leeds, well anything can be considered posher than Harehills and Hyde Park. But I am in no way posh actually hailing from northern ireland descent! And the fact being the area of Harrogate I am from is probably the 2nd poorest in the district. Most of my uni money is maintenance grant and having been the recipient of EMA for 2 yrs previous I wouldn't consider myself well off at all!
I personally see a distinct difference here of the so called 'rahs' and 'posh students'. There are some unfriendly people, namely the ones who are from extremely well off backgrounds and look down on you because you aren't wearing designer, and myself having never worn a piece of designer clothing in my life, they would not be friendly to me. I have experienced the dirty looks on the bus when I went to uni looking like I'd been through a hedge backwards and i was well aware i looked like crap, but they did comment on how bad i looked in full earshot!
In JBP yes, there are posh kids, who's mum and dad are funding their uni lifestyle but they in no way look down on you at all. I haven't found anyone who has been unfriendly to me yet. If I do I will take all this back and agree with you Afro Samurai lol. I can't understand why anyone would have given you an unfriendly vibe on open day, geeez they were getting paid to show you their rooms.. but maybe the toll of being polite etc all day long was wearing? It's a shame you got that vibe because it really is a great place to live
