Re: Work experience in hospitalsi would prefered to write an email but they don't have an email or work experience department....so thanks anyway(Original post by Wolfy^)
One other option is tracking down the email address of that hospital's HR department. They are the ones usually handling work experience placements, and will email you back to tell you exactly what you need to do and how.
The only time I had to actually talk on the phone was when setting a date for an informal interview to decide where my placement is going to be.
#LE: And I got negged because I was sharing my experience and trying to help? What?
And the guy above me got negged for offering sensible advice? Sweet.

Re: Work experience in hospitalsWhy don't you try challenging yourself and maybe ring around too?(Original post by bluepearl)

It's essential that you have excellent communication skills, both oral and written, and if you feel you're not confident over the phone, then actually ringing people might help?
Just try it out and see what happens.

Re: Work experience in hospitals
I got my preferred choice, Cardiology. Since the heart is central to the functioning of our bodily systems it was really intriguing to see cardiac medicine in it's reality; with it's highs and lows. I witnessed and learnt a lot during my week. Mind you, it was humorous at times but also very emotional too. Unlike my peers I didn't get to see a plethora of departments, but instead of continual ward rounds, I was often placed in the surgical theatre, geneticist clinics & elderly cardiac unit. Was bad in theatre one time when a surgeon mistook me for a medical student and started asking me all these questions regarding a Coronary Angiogram image that he's just performed; I gave the vaguest AS-Level Biology answers possible - he wasn't too pleased XD. Too bad my local hospital stopped doing work exp a year back due to 'funding' issues.
But as said above Cardiology and Surgery are fairly popular. My cousin was in the surgical institute during her week. Ironically, she wasn't even allowed in theatre :/.
Good luck in your career choice! -

Re: Work Experience and Voluntary Work - READ BEFORE POSTING
Hi everyone.
I am currently in year 12 and am hoping to apply for Medicine for 2013 entry. I don't have any medical related work experience under my belt at the moment but am hoping to have something sorted out for during the summer holidays.
I have been working in Boots as a Healthcare Advisor every Saturday since October 2012. Does anyone know if this would count as any relevant medical experience? I generally hand out medicines to customers and am halfway through completion of a Healthcare Advisor Programme for which I have to learn about minor illnesses and how to best treat them and recommend relevant products to customers. I am also hoping to gain more experience in the Pharmacy as I work alongside Dispensers but have not been trained in dealing with Prescriptions yet.
Any help/thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! -

I got a placement to work in St. John's ambulance too. what all things do i need to do more?

Re: When shadowing a doctor in hospital.
Hey all the advice on here will be really helpful!!
How did you go about organising your shadowing?? Just email the Consultants directly or go through the hospital?? Theres no info at all on my local hospital site about work experience or shadowing although I do have a list of consultants names! Thanks

Re: When shadowing a doctor in hospital.
It also depends if you have a prior relationship with who you're shadowing. I was lucky enough to have a few doctor friends who were happy to let me shadow them, so they were fine with me asking questions.
But since then and having had my interviews in Feb/March I think the best advice I can give is to observe the processes involved. I shadowed an anaesthetist and was present for surgery. Me talking about how they communicated and worked as a multidisciplinary team seemed to be what my interviewers wanted to hear. -

Unfortunately the process of applying for work experience varies considerably between trusts and individual hospitals. Some (usually in cities) have a formal application procedure, others have no formal system and are happy for students to contact staff direct if they want some shadowing. I would advise contacting the Consultants or their secretaries directly with a concise request

Re: When shadowing a doctor in hospital.Yeah i'll do that! Its just a list of names and their specialties so I think ill just pick a few that interest me and send to them(Original post by TooSexyForMyStethoscope)
