That does surprise me, as every student midwife I know (from all over the UK) has to do venepuncture, we had to do a theory sesion about 6months in before we were let loose on real women - but it is a skill that you need to be signed off as competent in to qualify.
^ The point that you're missing is that from 2009 the pay is going to go down as the EWTD makes it illegal to work more than 48 hours in a week. The current quoted figures are for current doctors who work more than 48 hours. In addition there will no longer be any free accommodation for FY1s, which means that you're going to have to fork out rent, again reducing the amount of money that you have to spend.

But they won't be allowed to get paid for it.

Aye - they make you sign an hours disclaimer when you start, which means you are "electing" to work overtime, and do not expect renumberation... Of course, you are not electing, if you actually want to work!

No other profession would take this crap...

Obviously, an all out strike would be wrong, but I do wonder about a "work to rule"... The Government clearly need to see first hand what would happen if Junior Doctors worked to the letter of their contracts... It's so very, very tiresome to hear the age old Governement cry that doctors are spoilt...

You should see the offical response to the Accommodation Petition... http://www.pm.gov.uk/output/Page15530.asp
If you guys dont start creating some better drama in this thread then I'm going to have to invoke godwin's law.
