Default Open Application Vs Magdalen, for PPE?

Looking at the alternative prospectus, and from a visit to the college, I've fallen in love with Magdalen. Would it be more advisable to apply to Magdalen for PPE, or submit an open application, in terms of maximising chances of securing a place at Oxford as that's much more important obv

the pooling system is pretty effective at ensuring that you get in somewhere if you're good enough. you sound like you have the best reason in the world to pick magdalen! that's what the whole college system is about. go for it!

Let's put it this way: your chances of getting into Oxford are roughly the same, but your chances of getting into Magdalen are significantly smaller if you do an open application. So if you've "fallen in love with it" and want to have a chance of actually ending up there, it would make more sense for you to apply there directly.

I'm in a similar position over Christ Church. I really loved the college when I visited but I was told in admissions that it gets a stupid number of applicants due to the whole Harry Potter thing, particularly from Americans and Japanese people who don't know which one to choose

i would have thought that that would be a reason not to apply there - because of that type of person perhaps? dunno personal opinion

someone i know though applied to trinity, which is apparently very popular, and before interview or anything he was just reassigned to another college. i think that is the worst thing that can happen applying to Christ church, no disadvantage in your application

Yeh, true really, though obviously they're not gonna let a lot of people in who only applied because of Harry Potter (I hope not anyway!) I just really loved the feel of the buildings and stuff. I have a few others I've looked at and liked though so I may just apply to one of those instead.

Definitely apply to Magdalen. Your chance of getting into Oxford is the same; plenty of PPE applicants from Magdalen got second interviews at other colleges this year IIRC.

Plus Magdalen rocks

Slight off topic, but Budgie, what's your name, if you don't me asking? There's a roughly 1/5 chance I'll be your college father.

If you want to go to Magdalen then apply there. Anyway, if you're good enough if you don't get into Magdalen you'll get pooled to another (similarly excellent) college.

Nope. Probably for the best, you're not meant to contact your college children before results day in case they don't get in...
