---------

French and German (Bath, Bristol, Oxford)
French and History (Warwick and Edinburgh)
Arts Combined, which can include French and German (Durham)

Anyone else?

May I ask why you're applying for French and German at some and French and history at others? Is it because you're doing German ab initio? And how are you getting round this in your personal statement?!
MA German at Edinburgh
BA German at Sheffield/Newcastle/Durham/Exeter
BA Computing/German at Leeds
Hola. Buongiorno.

I'm studying for a BA in Spanish and Italian (Joint) at the University of Sussex.

Well I really wanted to do all 3, so i thought I'd apply for all three and let fate decide (that's what all the cool kids do).
I'm not doing German ab initio, which is ****, because it means I've got to speak it at interview! And the written test, which will **** me over - but hey!

In my PS I spoke mainly about my interest in language generally in the first few paragraphs, and then a little bit about how my study of French and German so far has been great, and then a shorter paragraph about history (making it look more like a hobby, hopefully), then a similar paragraph about politics, a paragraph about work experience and then something about the future.

Also, admissions for the french and history courses to which I applied are administered by the french departments, so the process circumvented that problem for me to a degree.

I also applied for Combined Arts at Durham, where all 3 can be studied, so I think that may be my first choice, although Oxford and Warwick look amazing too.

(Of course, it will all bakcfire and I'll get no offers! )

i only had one interview out of the unis i applied to and i had to speak french, it was truly the most horrible experience of my life, ive never mumbled so much crap like that and i am surprised they gave me a place on the basis of that shambolic performance. im sure you'll be fine though!
I've just found out that I've been invited for interview at Cambridge yaya! So happy, for some really bizarre reason!

Good show. Heard anything back from your other choice yet (King's, wasn't it ?) ?

It's the 10th December one with Dr Bunyan at Gonville & Caius, and one with Dr Holton at Selwyn. They haven't said anything about a written test, so I'm presuming/hoping not!

Yeah, King's. Nope, haven't heard anything from them. I'll probably have to go for interview there too, although it's more a sort of chance to visit the place, I think, rather than an Oxbridge interrogation!

anita bunyan? she's apparantly lovely...teaches my friend nick for the german history and thought paper. you're going to have fun getting from caius to selwyn hehe, it's a good 10 min trek through kings, with much toursit dodging to be had as well.

go on the german dept website and you can find profiles of all the teaching staff and fellows, complete with what their specialties are. it helps to know, just so you can have a guess at what sort of things they might ask you. dr collier, my interviewer, for example, is a french specialist, and so harped on about the headscarf issue for ages with me.

Aww, cheers. I think I had a look a while ago, but just to see what the people looked like:rolleyes:, so I'll revisit and look at specialities!

I was in Cambridge this year on the Shadowing Scheme they run (you get to follow a student about and annoy them for three days) so I can remember the walk to the Sidgwick site! Which is actually really nice I know my way about!
