Tutor...?

I need to enlist the help of a private tutor (mainly through correspondence, not actually meeting in person) for a number of GCSE subjects (as well as possibly A-Level English).

Please correct if I'm wrong, but I have always assumed that a tutor is a person who will know all about marking schemes, what I will need to write in my coursework, what I will need to learn/improve for my exams, will mark my practice papers, etc. Are there tutors who can do several subjects in general, or are they mainly people who just specialise in one or two subjects?

Lastly, how can I find a good tutor/s? How can I make sure they're good?

In my opinion tutors only work for certain subjects, like Maths. Revision subjects like Biology do not require a tutor and will not really help, they just require learning. If you can't do that you won't do well with or without a tutor, but you don't say which subjects you want a tutor for. Secondly, having a tutor in correspondence doesn't sound like a very good idea either, you really need to have one in person to experience the full effect. Most tutors do specialise in a few subjects, like the maths and sciences. Professional tutors should and will know about GCSE Coursework and Mark Schemes etc. As for finding a good one, I would do some internet research to find some good tutor agencies and look for some feedback that might be on this forum on especially good agencies.

I hope you find this information useful.
