Er. It's the law. Under the Data Protection Act, the University isn't allowed to reveal anything about a student without the student's permission. That goes as far as staff not being permitted to confirm that an individual is even a member of the University, even to his/her parents. That's not just a theoretical extrapolation, either: it happens.
Some students are estranged from their parents, or are here against their parents wishes. It's not for the University to second-guess that.

The University's responsibility is to the student (who is an adult, right?), NOT to the mother. Who's paying the fees isn't relevant.


Evidently his mother knew he was a student at lanc anyway.

If I was in his position I'd be more annoyed at my mother for embarrassing me than at the professor who mentioned a few of my modules.
