Default Advanced Higher Modern Studies or Higher?

In fourth year I studied intermediate 2 history and this year I'm doing higher history and next I'm doing Advanced Higher History however I put my name down for crash higher modern studies but do you think I would be allowed, or be able to deal with this course if i simply took advanced higher modern studies without any previous knowledge in the subject? I know that people in my school have been allowed to take advanced higher history without doing it before but I was wondering if this you would recommend me sticking with crash higher or doing advanced?
Thank you

The advanced higher course is a bit different from the higher, it's mostly about Law and Crime and the suchlike, so there isn't much from higher to build on. Go for it! At least, if you totally don't get it, you can drop down to higher, which is still a great course.

Advance Higher Modern Studies all the way. Its the only thing that is making me want to make to school after study leave.

In terms of crashing Adv Higher I would say it really depends on what knowledge you have on current issues. People in my class this year where crashing higher modern studies and many of them found it hard let alone crash adv higher. However some of them didn't know basic things like who david cameron was or anything to do with the government for that matter. To be honest if you keep your self up to date and have good balance in your essays you should be fine for higher. But if you are really confident go for Adv Higher.

Hope that helps

i think you should go for it, modern studies is easy if you work hard at it.

i cant find a thread about the higher modies exam, so here will do

can anyone guess what the essay questions are going to be on?
i went to some modern studies thing in dumfries in march where the people who write the exam gave presentations, and the USA presentation was on 'President Bush: imperial president or lame duck?' i think... and the Africa one was on trade and other factors affecting development.
Hope those questions come up!!

My teacher said we should look out for a question on American Presidential elections as it is the hot topic at the moment. Also I really hope a question about PR or FPTP comes up as it is the easiest topic imo and there's loads to write about.

Does anyone have any tips on essays about American Presidential elections? Or about President Bush : imperial president or lame duck? This is my weakest area of the whole course and I just know it is going to come up! Arrrgh! *is praying for a USA question on ethnic minorities*

I also agree that the FPTP/PR stuff is the easiest topic and it is quite easy to write a decent essay on it quickly. Am ok with most of the first unit stuff, will probably do the questions on Decision making in central government and Electoral systems. Would have thought that just about everyone does Electoral systems?

im not too sure about the american presidential elections.. but for the president bush one you just have to write about how after 9/11 he was an imperial president cos he used 168 executive orders (but that all changed after the 2006 mid terms cos he lost some support), then about how hes the commander in chief of the armed forces, then about how he can veto bills or whatever it is and about how hes in charge of the national security and stuff oh and also about how he can pass a law without congress if it adjourns within 10 days.. im just doing this off the top of my head so i dont remember it too well!.. then for the balance you'd write about how he isnt that powerful cos the house of reps. can over ride his veto if more than 2/3 vote to do so.. then about how the supreme court werent pleased with quantanimo bay etc.. as i said im doing it off the top of my head so it might not help much!
if you use the green international issues textbook its in there somewhere!
hope that helps

Our teacher also thinks that Presidential powers is a question that will come up because since they introduced the topic it has never been asked.

For Africa on on factors affecting development would be great.

For Voting Behaviour and systems I think it will either be on social class or the media influence. I think voting systems is unlikely because it was asked last year.

For decision making in central government I want Pressure Groups becuase it is an easy topic to learn and there are so many examples.

For Health and Wealth I want a wuestion on suucess of Government Policies.

DME- Pretty sure it will be health reated because last year it was on wealth. I think precription charges is a possible because it has had a lot of media attention.

Anyone else pushed for time in the exam?

My friend did her Higher History last year, and crashed Modern Studies this year. She was brilliant at History, and could have taken the Adv. but the school didn't offer it. She crashed MS this year, and still found it hard. I dunno when the exam is, and I'm pretty sure she'll get a brilliant mark for it, but I think she'd recommend you just crashing the Higher in it.
