Default Sociology?

Hi, am in the process of fully confirming my options for AS courses that I'll be taking in September only I've realised that I have a clash on the timetable. I wanted to do Politics but it clashes with Economics so instead I could do Economics and Sociology as well as my other courses.

Of course I would only choose a subject if I knew it would benefit me and as it's quite close to Politics I am sure that it would.

Is Sociology a good A level course and is it respected at universities?

Thanks for your help.

I would suggest sticking with a core subject, such as English/Maths/or a Science.

I don't think it is "not respected", but it would probably be safer to choose one of the other subjects.

I'm already doing English and History and I'm wanting to go into Business & Management.

Well, if you are already taking English and History (which are both very well respected subjects), then you would probably be fine taking Sociology if you enjoy it and think you will do well at it.

Although, maybe a Science would be a good choice? It shows that you have a broad knowledge, as you will also be taking essay-based A Levels alongside it.

Thanks. I'm not too sure on Science seeing as I did the Applied Science course at GCSE thinking the level would be overall higher but the whole class thought that Applied Science was an "easy way out" and were basically all drop outs and I think that the disruption in the classroom has affected my scientific knowledge significantly! Because of this I don't think I would be confident in getting a good AS grade. Do you think Product Design would be alright instead of a science because it's all practical and involves making skills?

I have had similar problems with my Science classes. Yes, i think Product Design or something like ICT would be excellent alongside your other two AS subjects. Product Design would show your more practical side, which would be great to put on your Uni application if you got a high grade.

By the way, I LOVE your avator.Lol.

Sociology isn't as tough as some other subjects but it won't restrict you from getting into some of the best Universities because my sister did sociology and was accepted by Warwick and I'm doing sociology right now and its good. The only thing I hate is the sociologists names.

Apart from that it's pretty good.

I always wanted to do History, but due to clashes on my timetable I ended up having to pick Sociology. At the time I was dreading it but it was definitely a good choice. It can be interesting and isn't the hardest subject in the world. With the other subjects you are doing it would be a good choice. Hope that helps.

I'm doing Sociology A-Level. I really enjoy the content of the course, it does open up your mind (also doing English, Maths and Business).

Sociology should get more respect than it gets. Everyone complains about social problems today and it really effects us in every aspect. Politics, business, housing and Sociology helps you understand it all. If you understand society and it's wants wouldnt that help with Business & Management?

If that dont take your fancy then Product Design.

Out of those listed I would choose sociology. However, I have never really enjoyed the subject.

sociology is interessting, but it can get quite repetative. out of the three i would go for that, but i think they're all seen as a 'soft subject'.

God i did sociology a level, it was VERY VERY repetitive and after a while it gets really dull.. some parts of the course are interesting, but not that interesting that you should do it for a level.. it has some transferable skills etc, but is way too much reading and remembering figures etc.. that being said for a subject i hated so much i did get a B in it at a level (4 marks off an A) lol

Neither psychology nor sociology are seen as soft subjects. Sociology can provide you with some useful knowledge about society and is usually seen as a 'mid-range' subject. Psychology is fine but I wouldn't pick it as my friend does it, and it seems boring to me.

I don't know anything about product design so can't comment...

sociology in principle should be very interesting but in reality being taught about it is boring especially methods.
