Re: Chinese people, welcome! [中國人, 歡迎你!] [中国人, 欢迎你!]UCL is a good university too, I considered about it before, but it's too expensive to me to study architecture in London, so I gave up~(Original post by 为人民服务)
sheffield is a good uni, the girls there are really hot. Kind of angery with myself for not applying. I applied to UCL instead, biggest mistake ever.

Re: Chinese people, welcome! [中國人, 歡迎你!] [中国人, 欢迎你!]Ofcourse you can do anything!, unless they specify..(Original post by XXZ)
Yeah~I like Sheffield, they are really good. They asked me to represent my street in a medium of my choice. So still confusing how to deal with it..may be Chinese traditional art??
Chinese traditional art- that will show you love your culture etc maybe ? XD
I liked Sheffield too, and I also liked the trams in the city itself, reminds me of Hong kong islandXD
I missed my offer for Sheffield last year, lol, they didnt ask for portfolio though :P, i guess its getting more competitive this year, which I'm really worried about ~! -

Didn't know you listened to Mika Nakashima btw! haha.
And what's this cooking thing everyone is talking about =D? I want to - in fact no - I NEED to learn how to cook more Chinese food before I get too old. =O I'm so worried that our generations are the going to lose culture!
(Hey Tiff we should actually get together and try and make foods XD!)

Re: Chinese people, welcome! [中國人, 歡迎你!] [中国人, 欢迎你!]
Nǐ hǎo, I've just started learning some Mandarin like.. this morning. It's pretty fun but bloody challenging (just how I like it).
Unlike loads of you I imagine, wǒ shì yīng guó rén hé wǒ shì 100% pó.
(yeah this pinyin sucks. I'm going to have to start writing in Chinese. Writing a complete sentence in Chinese letters would be such an awesome feeling
)
I think I recognise 中國人, is that literally middle-kingdom people? (zhōng guó rén)
Any advice? I'm doing some audio lessons. Tā hěn shàn
Audio lessons complemented by this online Mandarin dictionary. Do you have to just.. start memorising characters?Last edited by Selkarn; 21-12-2008 at 21:58. -

looking back upon how i learned my native tongue,
1. pinyin (phonetic alphabet + tones "be careful for the third tone....pretty tough at least for me it was though
" )
2. the strokes ( character radicals "memorising them based on thier connotation *my special methods, heehee*)"+ stroke order "left-->right & top -->bottom & outside--> insight" )
3. how to write chinese characters
4. phrase
5. making sentences
6. reading + writing
plus, oral and listening all the time.

Re: Chinese people, welcome! [中國人, 歡迎你!] [中国人, 欢迎你!]Haha cool. You know the Chinese arch near town? I saw that had the zhong symbol on it, what does the other one say? I'm sure it isn't guo.(Original post by linca2)
Lol yeah literally it's middle kingdom people. It means Chinese people. XD Lol
Lots of Liverpoolers on TSR
I put the sentence into a website I found online, with like "wo1" after each word for the tone, can't remember what one though(Original post by 薇薇公主)

Thanks for the help. Is the third tone the one that's down and up? That's easy
in fact they're all easy!
What do you mean by radicals? -
Re: Chinese people, welcome! [中國人, 歡迎你!] [中国人, 欢迎你!]你個personal statement要好好寫啊!(Original post by XXZ)

這個學校是甚麼? 只是關於portfolio的題目? 嘩! 你有幸運!
你一定要羅這個機會!

the radical is component of a chinese character ( sometimes on one side of a word).(Original post by Selkarn)
What do you mean by radicals?
i.e. 你 (you) : the radical is the left part of the character signifying it's something related to human beings. and also like 他 (he)
can you understand?
mmm...another example:
草 (grass)its radical is the upper part of the word which implies the word represents a kind of plant.
btw, radicals can't be typed out on pc.
